2 West Seattle Tool Library milestones: 100 members, 1000 tools

From Sustainable West Seattle‘s Patrick Dunn:

We had our 100th member walk through our Tool Library doors a little after noon today. To mark the milestone properly, The Tool Library awarded Carl Sheit with a $20 gift certificate to Junction True Value, a free Tool Library t-shirt and an honorary lifetime membership.

Our Tool Library Manager, Micah Summers, estimates that we probably also received our 1,000th tool earlier in the day, after a very generous donation from a couple who were happy to be making some room in their garage.

Not surprisingly, the Tool Library is now looking to expand to other West Seattle locations to increase the community’s ability to access the collection. As part of that process, we’d love to hear from West Seattle.

Where should the next Tool Library be? Let us know at library@sustainablewestseattle.org.

(The current location, if you haven’t been there yet, is on Puget Ridge, north end of South Seattle Community College.)

Woohoo! Two big milestones in one week.

As far as locations, I like the fire station on 35th or the Genesee Hill Elementary location which is now empty – and would also make a great community center.

Second the Genesee Hill community center idea as well as a tool library already proposed there!! The Genesee Hill folks could definitely use some help pulling all this together.

I agree with Kate on the locations. Good going on the members and all the tools. Keep up all the good work you guys are doing.

    Congratulations Tool Library!

I hope to be your 10X member.

Yet I wonder at your stated desire to establish a second location. You only have 100 members. I would think a second location would be warranted at the 500-1000 member line, but 100? The costs & overhead involved in running a second location will have a strong impact on your ability to run either location well.

Yet I realize I really don’t know or thoroughly understand your business, I’m just shocked that a second location is viable already.

    Thanks, Jason.
We’re working on a couple different strategies to make our fast growing collection more accesible and convenient to folks throughout West Seattle. Low overhead, as you noted, is essential in that equation, and we’ll definitely be weighing our ability to increase access with our ability to run multiple locations well and on a tight budget.

Sorry, comment time is over.
