Dick’s Drive-In poll results: 2nd place, and a future semi-promise

After 3 weeks of voting, the Dick’s Drive-In “where to build a new location?” poll results are in. From the company:

After a phenomenal customer response to an online poll, Dick’s Drive- In Restaurants announced today plans to focus their search for a new restaurant location within a 20 mile area north of the original Dick’s in Wallingford. After almost 3 weeks of voting, the north region, including Shoreline, Mountlake Terrace, Lynnwood, Edmonds, and South Everett scored highest with 53,810 votes, or 46 percent of the 115,524 votes cast. South [which included West Seattle] captured 28 percent, (32,180 votes), and East received 26 percent (30,534 votes). …

“This is an historic time for our family’s small business,” says Jim Spady, Vice President of Dick’s Drive-Ins and son of co-founder and namesake, Dick Spady. “The outpouring of support has been overwhelming and humbling. North received the most votes, and that is where we will now focus our efforts.” Spady added, “We want those who voted South and East to know that we heard their voices also. If the new northern Dick’s is a success, the next two Dick’s Drive-Ins will be built in the South and East regions.

Meantime, as discussed amply during the voting, West Seattle already has fabulous burgers, so be sure to show them your love.

That’s a total bummer. The only reason that the South didn’t get as many votes is because there isn’t one here for us to enjoy. The North has enough…Try expanding out so that the Dicks legend spreads out further. Just a suggestion. Still love ya!

It also doesn’t hurt that their County Exec promoted the polling.

I would be very surprised to see a Dicks appear anywhere south of I-90 unfortunately.

Gold Bar would be a good location.

NOOOOOOOO….. Us southenders have to travel through downtown and we have a perfect place for a Dicks Burger stand!!! Right at the intersection of Alaska and Fauntleroy!!!

Using a web poll to decide this? That’s pretty dumb. I guess people on the north end have no lives so they sit at home on their computers all day.

  • disappointed in west seattle September 20, 2010 (10:29 am)

Bummer is right! The “north end” has enough already, PLUS they have Kid Valley. What does West Seattle/Burien have???? (that’s a local chain)

I think they need to reevaluate.

  • Noelle September 20, 2010 (10:31 am)

Awwwwwwwww! Looks like it will still just be a treat to grad accross town on Queenanne or Capital Hill! Too bad!

  • GenHillOne September 20, 2010 (10:40 am)

That was a wonky web poll anyway. I went back after the “one more day” reminder and it was in yet another format. Boo for another north end location. Although, isn’t WS still within 20 miles of the Wallingford location??

What are they thinking? It’s like opening one across the street from an existing one. An internet poll is not market research. Oh well I like Zippy’s.

  • Metal Jesus September 20, 2010 (11:26 am)

It would be nice of Dicks was a franchise. Buying a franchise for West Seattle and just opening it yourself, would be a no-brainer to an investor!

I actually think this is great news. We have local burger spots already and I’ve never been a fan of Dicks.

  • SA September 20, 2010 (11:53 am)

What is the local burger spot? I actually don’t know.

Dicks is great for those after midnight cravings. I don’t think you can even purchase prepared food much of anywhere in West Seattle after 9:30pm besides Jack in the Box and McDonalds.

Well of course the north region won. Look at the population. Duh.
    @SA: Zippy’s. Go there now.

It’s called Marketing, folks. Odds are they’ve known from day one where the new joint is going to be. Throw in a wonky poll and look at the free press you get.

Where do I log on to vote for a return of Groucho’s?

  • defenestrator September 20, 2010 (2:13 pm)

Groucho’s! Wow, I’d forgotten all about them. Right where the Starbucks drive-thru is on Avalon, if I remember correctly?

It is well know amongst students at Shorewood HS in Shoreline that a student wrote a program that allowed him to spoof other IP addresses and vote for “north” thousands of times.

  • Tracey September 20, 2010 (5:08 pm)

“North” was classified as all the way from downtown Seattle to Snohomish county? lol It doesn’t seem like any other area could win, since that covers such a very broad region.

Zippys! If you haven’t experienced the Lil Zip w/Bacon and Cheese – you are in for a delight! I think Dicks is good, but Zippys is the GREATEST

  • gee September 20, 2010 (7:39 pm)

Booo! there are already so many out there. Bad choice Dick’s!

  • 35this35mph September 20, 2010 (8:31 pm)

I heart Zippy’s. But, I have to confess, the fact that they can’t take my plastic money card means that I often have to go elsewhere. I use cash so infrequently that when I’m cruisin’ for lunch and I happen upon Zippy’s I find myself thinking, “Dangit! no cash.” And move along to less tasty but more convenient eats. The onsite ATM is little help because it takes a bite and so does my bank for frequenting an “alien” ATM.

  • MLJ September 20, 2010 (9:54 pm)

Actually, I think this kinda backfired. This way they disappointed the majority of the voters (54%). Before Zippy’s I may have cared. But my allegiance lies with the truly local business that doesn’t make me beg to be a patron. LONG LIVE ZIPPY!

  • Westside J. September 21, 2010 (2:15 am)

    You’re blowing it, Dick’s.

Half the reason I’d like one here is the hours Dicks is open.. Us night owls have hardly any choices in seattle as a whole, let alone the Westside. Zippy’s decides to stay open till 2, they’ll have a line out the door most the week I’d bet.

  • Paul September 23, 2010 (12:24 am)

    Flakey Jakes!

  • Jeremy September 23, 2010 (12:40 am)

I prefer Zippy’s over Dicks anyway. Problem is the place is so dang small and they take cash only not to mention the tenant next door having a field day calling the towing company.

Sorry, comment time is over.
