Smoke over the Olympics: Forest fire visible from West Seattle

We saw the plume of smoke over the Olympics too – looks like it’s a new (or newly flared-up) forest fire; checking to see if it’s the “Hopper” fire listed here, researching to find out more – that’s the only one in the Olympics, according to this list. Meantime, thanks to Shannon for sending the above photo, just as we were publishing the first version of this item. (And thanks to everyone else who’s sent photos since; here’s more information on the area where it’s burning, Mount Hopper.) 11:12 PM: By all accounts, it IS the Mt. Hopper fire. Turns out KING5 went over and shot video via chopper on Friday – see it here. The fire’s official infopage says “fire managers” plan a flyover tomorrow to assess it again. Also, here’s a somewhat-more-zoomed-in photo taken from Alki by David Hutchinson:

Thanks for reporting on this…looks like you guys got the scoop (again), as I just checked the PI and Times and they don’t have anything up yet. We’re on our porch right now looking at this thing and were trying to figure out what it was…

I don’t think this will work, but I’ll try it.

    Edit – Aw dang.

Sorry, we can’t embed images in comments currently but probably in a future update. You can embed them in forum posts fwiw – with the carat img src = etc. html tag, as long as they’re not wider than 500 pixels … TR

This morning at 8:45, there’s still some smoke to be seen from the area, but it doesn’t seem to be the same volume as last night.

Sorry, comment time is over.
