PCC Natural Markets announces West Seattle remodeling project

Just announced today by PCC Natural Markets (WSB sponsor) – a remodeling project is set to start this month, and will continue through fall, with expected completion around the holiday season, according to PCC’s Tom Monahan. Highlights from the official announcement:

The deli will offer pizza made fresh on-site, a gelato bar, kombucha on draft, self-serve hot foods and a larger soup bar. The deli will continue to feature a variety of salads and entrees, but displayed in new cases and prepared in a remodeled kitchen.

The produce department will be relocated to the east side of the building, bathing the fruit and vegetable displays in natural light from large new windows along California Avenue. The grocery aisles will benefit from a more open layout and design and the meat department will receive a new prep area and feature new display cases.

The classroom will be moved to the southeast corner of the store. The state-of-the-art kitchen classroom will be surrounded in glass, so customers can see the acclaimed PCC Cooks instructors in action. PCC Cooks is an award-winning cooking school offering more than 1,000 classes annually, with plans of offering over 200 classes at the West Seattle store post-remodel.

The outside of the store will benefit from the remodel as well. New seating will be provided for customers and there will be cosmetic upgrades to the exterior.

Energy efficiency will be boosted as well. You can read the full announcement by going to the PCC Natural Markets website.

I’ll be curious to see how this affects shoppers during the construction – are they going to be closing off various areas and letting us shop in others? Will items be relocated during construction (when an area is being worked on), or simply not available? I think the remodel will ultimately be great and am looking forward to the improvements, but would love more info on the during-construction logistics.

I second Sue’s concerns about the impact on shoppers during the project. It’s not like PCC shoppers can easily shift to another store, like a Safeway shopper can.

Super great that this is happening during the time that the Admiral Safeway will be out of commission! Pfffft!!!

Now if they could just figure out how to stock a decent tomato in the summer…

This is HAPPY news! Thank you PCC for remodeling such a great store and for expanding services.

Kombucha on draft is about the silliest, hippiest goddamn thing I could ever dream of.

not great timing for those living in the admiral district

yeah.. now we’re only left with met market and the other safeway to shop at!

Very interesting. I just signed up for two evening classes at the West Seattle PCC, one in September and one in October. I’m really looking forward to them, but now I wonder whether these and other West Seattle classes will be cancelled or relocated to other stores, such as Greenlake.

I agree with Sue and Mark K. I do most of my shopping at PCC, the rest at Safeway. And the Admiral library’s going to be closed for almost a month, too. I’m going to be doing a lot more driving.

Of course groceries will still be available. I can’t think of a single grocery remodel* in which products are just not sold. I’m sure the deli will be intermittently closed during the remodel, but I’d bet PCC has plans to continue selling all groceries throughout the process.

    *Complete rebuilds/teardowns are obviously exceptions.

And then there are those of us who do not have a car and do not have the option of going to another PCC. I’ll have to have food delivered or go to Metro Market where the same products that PCC carries are significantly more expensive. Plus no 10% off.

Please do find out more about what the store plans are during the remodel.

I have followup questions out including a request for renderings. Hopefully will have more info tomorrow – TR

I agree with Jns! Silly, but loveable. After living on a remote island for a while, access to something like kombucha on draft is wonderfully superfluous. Here in west seattle, we really are living better than 99% of the rest of the world. Makes a little construction at a pricey market seem like much less of a crisis…

Yay PCC! I’m so glad the Texan chain Whole Foods looks like a no-go and instead our local PCC is expanding and becoming even better. Definitely overdue for the amount of population over here.

And seriously, people are actually whining that PCC and Safeway and the Library are remodeling at the same time? Um this means where the recession is hitting everyone hard, WS is still seen a great community to invest in. Go to Metropolitan Market for a few months (It won’t bite, really. It’s expensive but not more so than PCC) and save up your library trips and go to SW or (gasp!) even Downtown Central and make a day of it. Geeze . . .

Regarding staying open during the remodel, if you read the entire description of the remodel, they are installing new flooring ‘throughout the retail area’- if groceries will still be available throughout the remodel, that sounds like a staging nightmare but possible I guess and it would take longer.

I have some answers from PCC which I’m processing for a followup story – should be atop the page shortly, and I will add the URL to this comment when it’s there – TR

Thanks PCC for working toward making an excellent store, even better. I admire PCC’s buying local and organic as much as possible to give the consumers what they are wanting.

Sorry, comment time is over.
