West Seattle coyotes: Two south-side sightings

2 coyote-sighting notes in the south half of West Seattle in the past 12 hours. First, from Dave in Westwood:

Got up @ 3:10 am to change a diaper … sleepily glanced out the window. Wasn’t expecting to see a coyote staring back at me across the street. Once it knew I had seen it, it ran down 34th toward Barton [map]. It also appeared like his/her left hind leg was injured, as it ran very awkwardly. Maybe that’s just how coyotes roll, but it didn’t move like a dog or wolf.

Next, from Kelly:

I’m almost positive I saw a coyote on Cambridge & 21st [map] @ about 9:20 pm. it was walking west on cambridge, I drove past, turned around to get another look, and it was walking into a woody area on 23rd. Run, kittens, run!

And that’s the point toward which we share these reports – in case you want to reconsider where your pet goes by itself, for example, if coyotes are seen nearby (and even if they’re not seen, chances are that they aren’t far). The state offers advice for how you (AND your pets) can co-exist with coyotes – read it here. (Previous sighting reports are archived here.)

Coyotes would not generally be attracted to your diapers anyway.

Kelly is right. She and he pups live in the wooded area at 23rd and Cambridge. She’s taken at least 3 cats that we know of.

Wow. We live on 21st and Roxbury. Have not seen any. THough I think they still have chickens and rabbits at the Community School.

I DID see a large 3 legged mama raccoon and 3 little ones cross Rox. last thurs. evening headed into the blackberry bushes on the South side.

FYI ! If you live anywhere near a green belt in Seattle….. Coyotes live there & have for a long time. If you saw one… you are lucky because any nosie that they consider human related, spooks them. 99% of the time that I have seen them…. they did now know I could….IE through a house window Etc.

Was jogging up the Thistle stairs just before one thirty this afternoon (Thur) when a dog was crying out in considerable pain from the underbrush. Very loudly. A few neighbors were out watching. The sound of the fight and the dog’s screeching was really horrible. Then it suddenly cut out.

Wearing shorts, I couldn’t work my way through the blackberry bushes, but you could see a bunch of either dog or coyote prints running in the mud. We were all pretty sure some neighbor just lost their dog to a coyote. I spoke to a neighbor who said they’ve seen them a lot in the area recently, and it looked like they were raising new pups. She was going to knock on the neighbor’s door.

I could be mistaken, but some poor pooch really got it, whether from a raccoon or something else. Just a warning, to anyone with chickens, cats or small dogs out there.

Okay, this might be a dumb question but can coyotes jump up onto a shed roof? That’s where my kitties like to hang out during the day and not too many dogs could bound up there, but a coyote….?

Report from 22nd and Roxbury-3 to 4 adults with 4 cubs have been seen (apparently one cub got hit by a car-maybe the one you saw limping???) and are getting brazen-standing in the road after a car has passed-apparently animal control will move them at $150 a piece????

“Hmmm….” (he said rubbing his furry chin….) “Are we SURE these are coyotes and not the dreaded clan of chupacabra?”
