Upcoming cleanup means Marination Mobile needs new WS home

After getting the word that Marination Mobile won’t be making its usual Saturday stops in West Seattle this weekend and next, we followed up with co-proprietor Kamala Saxton on something we had heard a while back – that the popular food truck was looking for a new West Seattle spot. Kamala replied it’s true, they need to move:

We have been granted an extension from the Seattle Housing Authority to stay at our current location until August, however, after that we will need to find a new WS location. … We are absolutely committed to remaining in W. Seattle on Saturdays and any leads you have would be greatly appreciated.

The 35th/Graham site (map) where they’ve been for a year has long been tabbed for a future development project – so we wondered if maybe the move mandate meant the project was starting up. We checked with Housing Authority media liaison Virginia Felton, and found out something a little different:

A long-planned cleanup is going to put the site out of commission, starting in September. “There’s pretty serious petroleum contamination on the site,” Felton explained, “but we finally got the money trickled down through EPA to the state to King County to do the cleanup.” Even after the cleanup, the site will be fenced, and “it’ll be a big pit for a while,” she said, adding that more specifics about the cleanup will be available by late summer. As for Marination Mobile – SHA hasn’t been able to find anything in High Point that’ll work, according to Felton; Saxton said her entreprise has examined some obvious possibilities like the remaining Huling sites in The Triangle, and Youngstown Arts Center, but nothing has clicked yet – so again, any suggestions, post them here (or contact them through marinationmobile.com). I think right in my back yard would be an excellent spot. ;) Hope you find a new home soon, MM!

I would love to go up to MM, grab food, then go in to the Beveridge Place and explore the many different beverages I could pair with it. Pretty much a perfect Saturday afternoon right there.

That said, I don’t know which of the vacant lots around there would work…

@ westseattledood: If they could negotiate on the Sunday/Saturday issue and come when the HPIC is having their new Sunday Market… Synergy?

Well, how about a partnership with the new produce stand there near Huling properties. Produce people would surely get more traffic, there appears to be lots of parking there, the nursery would get more traffic and I would not have to move to get Marination!

How about the defunct gas station at 35th and Barton? Right across from Tony’s Market?

    35ththis35th –

Kinda’ what I was hinting at – lovely idea, is it not? Sunday market artisans – MM food crowd – yah, synergy would be very good.

Huling bros. site near the produce stand.

I second the idea of the old gas station at 35th and Barton. There is the empty (for now) grass field right next door where people could have a picnic with their food and a fair amount of street parking.

I also think the 35th and Barton site is excellent!

Come to Highland Park or somewhere along Delridge! We need food options around here.

  • Elikapeka July 1, 2010 (7:43 pm)

How about using the parking lot at Our Lady of Guadalupe (the one across the street from the church/school building)

  • anonyme July 2, 2010 (7:39 am)

“it’ll be a big pit for a while”

Thanks, Virginia. What WS needs is another “hole”.

Another vote for 35th & Barton — right across from Tony’s & the SuperDeliMart would be incredibly convenient!

Sorry, comment time is over.
