West Seattle 5K, report #1: And the winners are … everybody!

(added 12:12 pm: clip shows the race start, 1st runner to last walker, about 2 1/2 minutes in all)

ORIGINAL 9:35 AM REPORT: The West Seattle 5K (co-sponsored by WSB) has 1,120 runners this year, 75 more than last year, according to the semi-official count from organizers. We’re waiting now for the first finishers. The sunbreaks are mostly gone but it’s still dry. 10:03 AM: Runners and walkers are still coming across, 39 minutes later. Here’s the first finisher, crossing the line, announced at 16:08:

That’s David McCulloch, finishing a full minute faster than last year, when he was the 6th male. The first female runner crossed at 17:41- Lauren Breihof from Western Washington University. (added 11:07 am, here’s video of her finish – the audio is incorrect, she was indeed the 1st female) – 16 seconds better than her time from last year, when she was the 3rd female:

(photo added 11:36 am) Shortly after the first finishers crossed, the inflatable start/finish line started to lose a little of its air – so volunteer power came to the rescue!

When the results are available online (they’re not yet, as of just past noon) – you’ll find them linked here. We’re also reviewing our photos for more memorable moments and will add some in a second wrapup later!

10:40 AM: The 5K’s over and all its trappings are being packed up; the Summer Streets festivities officially begin around 11 – it’s still dry, but chilly, so bundle up!

Just returned from my first ever 5k. I’m excited to say that I beat my stretch goal of finishing in under 30min, at 29min. I’m proud to have taken part of this event for a good cause, and look forward to next year!

I, too, just got back from the race. It was definitely a cool and breezy day, but a fun run nonetheless. Thanks to the organizers and volunteers. I love running in the street.

I said I was going to do it and I DID IT Y’ALL! I think that guy was finished before I got to the mile marker, but I did it! 38:23. I’m 43 and this was my first road race in ten years or more. Woooot! Congrats everyone. And congrats especially to my husband Dave — this was his first race ever, which he finished in 34:02.

Everybody wins? Why don’t the other teams who play the Mariners give them the win too?

for those who enjoy 5k or 12 k run/walks…this is not local to West Seattle, but it’s a really fun one…Sound to Narrows in Tacoma through Pt. Defiance Zoo. Lots of running teams from Ft. Lewis, etc. I’m not able to do this kind of thing anymore, but I used to…and had a blast!

On behalf of the West Seattle High School PTSA, thank you to everyone who participated in the 2010 West Seattle 5K! It was so great to see all of those happy, positive people, all in one place. And congratulations to everyone who ran their first 5K!

Your participation today helps the WSHS PTSA provide financial support for academic programs and promote parental involvement at the high school. Our work is not possible without you. Thanks again and we hope to see you next year!

Does anyone know why it’s taking so long for the timing company to get the times posted? Does it normally take this long?

I finished something like 750th. Woohoo! And afterwards to reward myself I ate a delicious CheeseHead omelet at the Heartland Cafe. :)

As you can tell, I’m very competitive.
