Semi goes off-road along West Marginal Way, takes out pole

Thanks to everybody who called/e-mailed about this one – we’re checking out the scene where a semi-truck went off the road on southbound West Marginal Way, just north of the LaFarge plant, and into the greenbelt, taking out a pole along the way. Heavy police response; no evidence of a fire/aid callout on the 911 log; one lane is blocked in each direction (see the photo below) but traffic IS getting by, both ways.

Maybe I’m incredibly biased because I received a ticket on New Year’s Eve day on W. Marginal, and I won’t speculate about whether or not speed was a factor, but it’s high time the cops start pulling over semis for their numerous infractions they commit routinely.

Once again, I have to caution, we have ZERO info on what caused this. Could have been a medical problem for all we know.

Ditto OP! I drive on there Mon.-Thurs. to take my son to/from school downtown. My hubby works at Boeing field he’s down there everyday. Many of those semi drivers are insane, and I say that as having been taught to drive by a truck driver. My BIL was a truck driver for many years. I anticipate their lunacy but they still manage to surprise me and almost wipe us off the road repeatedly.

They need to get commerical traffic enforcement officers on there. Maybe that will help!

you know, i was driving my miata (rear wheel drive, not a lot of weight in the back) yesterday and i nearly spun-out due to an especially oily and wet road. and i was definitely not breaking the speed limit. i suspect unburdened semis have the same problem: rear wheel drive power with no weight over the rear wheels. that’s a bad combination on slick roads. now, speed could have been a factor, but it may not have been.

Right now I’m covering a candidates’ forum at South Seattle CC and beforehand, mentioned the crash to the few early arrivals, including candidate “Mac” McElroy – a former truck driver – who said something similar. Data point!

I wish the driver a quick recovery if he/she was injured!

What I want to know is what the semi has against the Polish.

I hope the driver in the little blue truck got a ticket for not covering his load. This stretch is dangerous not only from the semi trucks but also all the idiots who don’t cover their load on the way the dump. This past weekend some jerk with an unsecured load lost a box of books of the back of his truck. It almost went through my windshield, the same one that is cracked due to a friggin semi truck on W.Marginal that didn’t wash their truck before leaving the yard. Try taking insurance info on that deadly road..

Sorry, comment time is over.
