West Seattle politics: Sabra Schneider drops out of House race

The race for State House Position 2 is now down to four candidates – Sabra Schneider just announced she’s dropping out because of an injury that will keep her from campaigning strenuously. Read on for her statement:

“It is with great regret that I’m announcing my withdrawal from the race to fill the House seat being vacated by Representative Sharon Nelson. One week ago, I tore the ACL and MCL in my knee, which I had previously injured two weeks ago. My doctors have informed me that the injury will require several months of rehabilitation. Given this fact, I do not believe I can engage in the doorbelling or meetings I had planned to do over the course of this campaign. Connecting with voters, while doorbelling, at community meetings and in person is a critical part of my campaign. I’ve elected to end my campaign and focus on healing my knee. I look forward to continuing to serve the community.”

“I want to thank the hundreds of people who have signed up to support the campaign over the past six weeks, as well as the people that have made financial contributions to this effort. I’ve been incredibly honored by the support and encouragement from the public. I also want to wish the field of Democratic candidates, each of whom would represent our district well in Olympia, the best of luck in their campaigns. I will make no endorsement today, but I look forward to hearing their visions for moving our district and our state forward.”

That leaves Democrats Joe Fitzgibbon, Mike Heavey and Marcee Stone, and Independent Geoffrey “Mac” McElroy. The next major candidates’ forum is planned at the next 34th District Democrats‘ meeting a week from Wednesday.

This is very sad news for the 34th District. Although there are still qualified candidates in the race for the house seat, I still do believe Sabra would have been the best person to fill the role. Let’s all hope that there are other arenas where Sabra’s insight and compassion can influence citizens across the district, county, state or nation. I wish the best of luck to you Sabra, in your future ventures. Hope the healing process is swift and permanent.

I am so grateful to have gotten to know Sabra during the short time we have had on the trail together so far. She has made a big impact on our community, as a professor at South Seattle, bringing openness to county government, and as a member of the 34th district Dems. I know she will continue to add a lot to our community and consider us all lucky to have her as a neighbor!
