HIgh-school baseball season is starting to intensify. This morning we have a West Seattle High School report courtesy of assistant baseball coach Scott Meaker – looking ahead to games today and tomorrow, recapping wins on Wednesday, and also noting the big fundraising dinner/auction Saturday to raise money for fastpitch softball as well as baseball – read on:

Today West Seattle plays Ingraham again, with the Varsity hosting the Rams at Hiawatha and the JV on the road. Both games are at 3:30 PM. The West Seattle JV is hosting the Seattle Lutheran JV on Saturday morning March 27th at 9:30 AM at Hiawatha.

On Wednesday, WSHS Baseball took on the Ingraham Rams. The Varsity traveled to Ingraham and played a marathon game, ending with a 23 – 2 win over their Metro League, Sound Division rivals. Senior Brandon MacKinnon was the winning pitcher. Freshman Sam Hellinger also pitched. Senior and team leader Trevor Martin went 2 for 2, both doubles, with 3 RBI’s. Junior Nick Savas went went 2 for 4 with 5 RBI’s, and Sophomore Jeff Watkins went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI’s. The Varsity is now 3-1.

The JV stayed in West Seattle and played Ingraham’s JV at the newly refurbished Hiawatha Sports Complex. The Wildcats handed the Rams a defeat, winning 10 – 0 in 5 innings. Freshman Andy Snook got the win with a one-hit perfomance, allowing no runs and walking only 2. Kyle Herard finished the game pitching the 5th inning by getting 3 outs on only 4 pitches. The West Seattle JV is now 3-0.

The West Seattle High School Baseball and Softball teams are inviting all of West Seattle to join them in their annual Spaghetti Feed and Auction Gala. The event takes place Saturday at the high school (3000 California SW) in The Commons. Dinner tickets are $12 per person and children age 5 and under are free.

Unique to the event this year, there will be a NO-HOST Bar / Social hour from 5 PM to 6 PM at St. John’s Episcopal Church next door to the high school on the south side of the high school parking lot. The doors to the High School Commons will open at 5:30 PM and dinner servings will begin at that time.

Veteran visitors to this storied event can attest to the amazing variety and value of donated items for the silent auction. One can expect to bid on gift baskets, art, sports uniforms and clothing, tickets to sporting events, Legendary Baseball items, gift certificates to restaurants, bike shops, and many West Seattle Merchants. The bidding is fun, exciting, and even sometimes competitive. It is the best thing happening in West Seattle that night, for sure! All proceeds go to support the Ladies of Fastpitch Softball and the Gents of the Baseball program.

Remember, nearly 80% of the funding for these programs comes from this event, so if you wish to continue to see these worthwhile programs flourish, please plan to join these players, their coaches and parents, and your West Seattle neighbors this Saturday, starting at 5 PM. This event is sponsored by the WSHS Booster Club. For more information you can contact Event Co-Coordinators Judy Wiggins (206-349-7197), Cindy Adams (206-719-6658) or Kim Gearon (206-932-2240), head Baseball Coach Velko Vitalich (vpvitalich@seattleschools.org, 206-252-8856) and/or head Softball Coach Carrie Burr (cjburr@seattleschools.org, 206-235-2235).

Thanks to Coach Meaker for the report! We welcome school reports of all kinds – sports, academic, special events – here are the ways to send them to WSB.
