West Seattle Crime Watch: Car window shattered

From Kristine:

I’m UNHAPPY to report that a car parked on California Avenue SW in front of the Lutheran Church at Dakota (map) had its back window COMPLETELY smashed. This happened yesterday (2/24) between noon & 6pm. The back window didn’t have a shred of glass left in the frame and the shattered glass was inside the car but sprayed out into the street leaving us to believe the window was intentionally hit (and hard) from the sidewalk. Nothing was stolen. I hope this hasn’t happened to anyone else as it’s a complete pain in the patoot & expensive for the owner.

While no consolation, as a FYI, this can happen by an accident. My across the street neighbor was mowing his grass a few months ago and the mower blade struck the “magic” rock that flew across the street and shattered my driver side window. He didn’t notice it until after he finished mowing, but he put two and two together and then called me about it. (Like any good West Seattleite would do…)

or an existing tiny, nearly invisible crack can blossom quickly into a shatter if the weather condtions change rapidly enough.

True. Just sideways pressure on glass can cause it to break, even hours later. The rock in the back seat, if there is one, would be the clue to this mystery.

My window was broken out on Tuesday late afternoon in the same neighborhood. I thought it may have been an accident but maybe not????

My back window was blown out by a potato size rock a few years back. I went up and down the block and saw one other car with rocks by it and dents all over the car. I think it was someone out joy riding and throwing rocks at cars as they went by. I hope you can find out what happend?

Same thing happened to me the summer of 2008 in Chelan. Don’t have to use a rock. Baseball bat did the job. Some brats, no doubt. Very big hassle. Had to buy plastic sheeting and drive all the way home to W. Seattle with that stuff in the window. If it was just a crack it wouldn’t explode like that. Car windows have safety glass.

Sorry, comment time is over.
