More West Seattle help for Haiti: Crutches needed

Just in, and time-sensitive, from Cathy:

We just found out that two physicians friends will be headed to Haiti this weekend. They have been told that there is a great need for crutches due to amputations. If you have any crutches that you could donate please bring them by our house by Sunday night so we can get them on the flight. They can be left in the driveway or in the back of the pickup parked outside. The truck is a beige GMC with a topper.

Our address is 3008 45th Ave SW. The house is blue and the cross streets are 45th and Stevens.

If you have any questions please call Cathy at 206-406-6633

    Hi Cathy,
I’m pretty sure my Mom has one, or maybe two sets of crutches. I will try and drop them off some time tomorrow. Thanks, what a great opportunity to help.

What a great idea, we have a pair in the garage that are going to be dropped off tomorrow! And I was just wondering what to do with them the other day because we cleaned out the garage.

    Amanda,
I bought all the crutches at the Burien and Dearborn Goodwill yesterday.

I also want to thank everybody for their responses. I was even contacted by people in Magnolia and Maple Leaf. The Blog is read by more than just people in West Seattle!

    • WSB January 28, 2010 (7:58 am)

So glad to hear of the good response! We do know there are indeed WSB readers outside West Seattle – last month, 100,000 homes/businesses visited the site at least once, and that’s more than even the highest estimates of peninsula population. It’s partly because we cover news of citywide interest as well as very mega-specific neighborhood stuff, and also because our partnership with the Seattle Times means WSB stories are linked from their home page at least a few times a week, bringing in readers from elsewhere who in turn happen onto other stories … TR

I have a pair of crutches that I was looking at the other night with the thought that they would be useful in Haiti. Thank you for the post, I am so glad to have a new use for them.

  • Steph in WS January 28, 2010 (11:50 am)

I was hoping to put them to good use again! Yay!

Cathy I will bring my crutches by…I hear they need shoes too are you accepting shoes as well or any other items?

  • Cathy January 28, 2010 (6:11 pm)

    Karleen,

I am just collecting crutches for this trip. I have had people drop of small braces and slings that are light weight.

I would like to know who would be collecting shoes because I would donate.

Not to be a wet blanket, but is this good intentions or is there an actual plan for the transportation of the crutches to Haiti? It is a very good idea, just want to make sure that it can get carried out.

  • Cathy January 29, 2010 (9:01 am)

I am collecting them. I am dropping them of with the Physician that is traveling to Haiti. She has insured me that she and the others she is traveling with will take care of the rest.

I’m sorry if that was not clear in my original post.

    Cathy-
I hear local schools are collecting shoes and maybe churches?? I haven’t got that far as to where and who…I also would like ot know specifics so I can drop shoes off.

Virginia Mason’s Drs. Tom Green and Lyle Sorensen will be traveling to Haiti.

    Per the VM website
    https://www.virginiamason.org/home/body.cfm?id=103

The documents are locked, but you can read a few sentences about the topics.

It appears that VM is merely a drop off location for shoes being collected by General Manager Mike Hightower of Service Steel Aerospace Corp. in honor of his daughter, Molly, who died in the earthquake. http://www.ssa-corp.com/

    Dear Cathy,
Good works. I have just started my journey to
collect 1,000 pairs of crutches. I just heard
from a group in Haiti and they said they needed
thousands. It is a good idea because so many of
us have them in our basements.
    Good Luck with your delivery.
