Wednesday night: 34th District Democrats make their choices

checkbox.jpgThey’ve already endorsed King County Council Chair Dow Constantine for County Executive, but otherwise, the 34th District Democrats have a lot of deciding to do tomorrow night – this area’s biggest political event of the primary season. Their website runs down the order in which they will vote on who to endorse, and notes that most of the voting will be done on written ballots. If you’re a member, be there – 7 pm, The Hall at Fauntleroy. As for the actual election: August 18 is the official date, but the voting begins as soon as the ballots arrive, and the county starts mailing them July 29.

Regardless of whether it’s technically correct, given that “whom” has fallen almost entirely off most people’s linguistic radar, it would actually look wrong in that sentence. So I’ve taken who/whom out entirely. I’m a nut for spelling but conversational in grammar – TR

I understand; language changes. I just wanted to point out that there remain those of us to whom the first version looks strange, as we still decline our pronouns.

Language follows usage, and each of us tugs the language in the direction we choose by our usage. Quixotic, perhaps–but I’ll keep tugging in the direction of retaining the few cases we have left. Who knows? Perhaps we can instigate a revival. At least we can make people think about their choices.

Yup. My “hill to die on” – besides spelling – tends to be classic apostrophe use. If you ever see “mens” or “womens” or “Albertsons” (etc.) here, you’ll know something terrible has happened (perhaps, the aliens came back for me) … TR

Well, except for more than one Albertson, as in a reunion of Albertsons, perhaps.

Shoulder to shoulder on that one!

Sorry, comment time is over.
