“National Day of Prayer” gathering tonight on Alki

Thanks to Alki’s David Hutchinson for sharing photos (top and bottom) of the National Day of Prayer gathering tonight at the Statue of Liberty Plaza — first time this event has been held since the plaza’s construction and dedication last year. (Following sentence and photo added 11:27 pm) Thanks to Sandi for sharing this photo of the Holy Rosary Children’s Choir singing at the Day of Prayer gathering:

Holy Rosary was among 10 local churches that participated in this event presented by the West Seattle Ministerial Association, and attendees weren’t deterred by the steadily gathering clouds:

Gatherings were held across the country – here’s the event’s official coast-to-coast website.

    “Eww, organized religion”

    Eww, intolerance.

Vccc, Eww people who mock a peaceful event, or belief of someone elses truth, happiness and peace found in Christ.

sa your post wasn’t up yet when i posted but I second that.

I also found the first comment on this post disconcerting but not totally unexpected. While I was at the rally yesterday a gentleman walked by on the other side of Alki Ave and yelled out “You’re all a bunch of crazy Christians!”

  • Smitty May 8, 2009 (10:52 am)

Don’t you just love liberal tolerance?

  • Wes May 8, 2009 (10:52 am)

    Yeah!!! We’re crazy!

  • Charles May 8, 2009 (11:08 am)

What’s next? Burning Man on Alki?

  • Erik May 8, 2009 (11:36 am)

Nice that the rain stopped for them.
I’d rather have these peeps visit my hood than the ones with no love in their hearts (aka gangs).

  • agirl May 8, 2009 (12:42 pm)

I prefer to call this day “National Day of Wishing”

I’m not the biggest synagogue/ church goer on Alki, but I enjoyed the presentation.
I’m almost 80 with all my fingers and toes so I gave a moment of quiet thanks to the Great Spirit and Buddha.
It doesn’t matter what you call it, what’s wrong with a little faith and hope?
Last week everyone was all up in arms about the gangs that were here.
Now they don’t want children praying here.
The thing is, there weren’t gangs here last night.
I love you Alki, but You don’t get it both ways.
As far as Burning Man on Alki, well, why not?
Performance Art, no matter how odd is still NOT gang violence.
Before others start in on “There are naked people at Burning Man”
Well, the bikini’s and shorts I see here are smaller then the sun dresses and Berkinstocks I saw at Burning Man 5 years ago.
Dear David and Smitty-I’m sorry you got yelled at.
The people who yelled at you and all the ewwww’s
    That’s NOT liberal tolerance.
Some people no matter what side of the fence, have to rain on others parades. It’s just their angry nature.

    Sorry about the double click.

  • Paul in Gatewood May 8, 2009 (1:35 pm)

Wow. I’m not religious myself, but what’s the deal? Let people observe their faith. It’s a free country. Like others have said, I’d much rather have these folks spending time at Alki than the gang-bangers.

Just be careful and NEVER mention that you believe in traditional marriage to an “open minded” liberal.

    You.

    Will.

    Be.

    Destroyed!

    Like Miss Cali.

  • Been here a long time May 8, 2009 (5:12 pm)

Smitty, I am sorry you have been so traumatized by liberals.
I hope that you someday meet a few real liberals.
I am a liberal and am NOT offended by “traditional marriage”
Miss Cali is a little off topic, but….
If you remember, she won despite her comment about marriage and the angry judge.
But she was destroyed because she admitted that her breast implants were paid for by the contest sponsors (Interview in Time’s New York)
and she posed topless in a few adult magazines.
    That’s breach of contract.
Please remember, she won despite her comment about marriage and the angry judge.
It’s the other stuff that got her striped of her crown.

Did anyone notice the lighting in the top photo, shining down on the statue of liberty? We can call it either a sign of hope, or just a beautiful image, but either way, I found the event very inspiring. I am thankful to be living in West Seattle, in our great country, where it’s okay for citizens of any religion to worship in a public park. Sometimes we take these things for granted.

Thank you to those who coordinated this event. Thank you to the musicians who sang and performed beautifully, and to the preachers who spoke from their hearts. Peace.

  • Joey May 8, 2009 (10:05 pm)

Miss Cali certainly did NOT win. “Open minded” liberal Perez Hilton asked her a question and the national media didn’t like her answer. Tolerance? Only if you agree with me says the Left.

The stuff about her implants and photos only came out AFTER the “open minded” Left decided to go after her. Since they have all but 5% of the market(Fox) they got her good.

The Left loves to call the Right out as hypocrites, but they are equally as guilty.

You for got the great Reverend Wright.

  • datamuse May 9, 2009 (9:31 am)

Actually, Alki’s a little small for what the Northwest Burning Man community gets up to. Though they did have parts of this project at SAM, not to mention the projects at the Burien Interim Art Space (one of which, by the way, is by an artist who also works for Nature Consortium).
    .
Their main festival event is held up north where there’s a large enough space for the art installations.
    .
My point is that to hold up Burning Man as somehow antithetical to the National Day of Prayer demonstrates a fundamental ignorance of what Burning Man actually is.
    .
As for the NDP itself, I have no particular objection to it, though I can’t figure out what it has to do with Burning Man, Carrie Prejean, or the media.

Topics like this lead to conversation.
    Conversation can lead anywhere.
Some of the comments get wildly off topic. (I think it’s fun)
    But as Datamuse just proved;
    info and education abound.
I didn’t know about the Burien Interim Art Space.
    Thank you.
I always look forward to expanding my education of the resources available.
Almost 80 and life is still an adventure.

Sorry, comment time is over.
