West Seattle Weather Watch: Hail!

Almost pea-sized. OK, call it split-pea sized. 3:22 PM: Shower’s over – not enough to completely blanket the ground, but as the photo above shows, a festive icy highlight for the mossed-over patio bricks here at WSB HQ. Forecast says hail possible “this evening.”

Seems the Blog has succumbed to this Pacific Northwest notion that hail is any ice that falls from the sky. By Midwest standards, anything less than marble size is SLEET. Only rarely have I seen hail here and that mixed with sleet – more clumps of sleet crystals and not the solid hail that is so destructive. I am not fixated on this desire to correct a whole region of the country but I come close to an English major’s desire to see the language used properly!

FWIW, the National Weather Service called it “hail” too (the forecast link has since been rolled over to whatever today’s forecast happens to be, since the site doesn’t use one-time-only links). Maybe it IS regional, but I’ve lived west of the Rockies my whole life and unless it’s really really tiny (and I went out in this one to get personally pelted while photo-taking – some chunks WERE pea-size), everybody calls it hail :) – TR
