Followup: Post-chopper search, Skyelar Hailey still being sought

We’re starting a new story today for updates, if and when we get them, on the search for 18-year-old convicted West Seattle burglar Skyelar Hailey, who police say fled late last night when they tried to arrest him on warrants, touching off an air and ground search that we covered here as it happened. Commenters have asked if we can get his mug shot from police; we have asked, but right now, they are not releasing it. From working in Seattle media for almost two decades, we can tell you mug shots have never been routinely available around here, except for three circumstances: 1. A very high-profile search (murder suspect, kidnapper); 2. Registered sex offenders, whose photos are included in the searchable online database; 3. If the criminal has served state prison time, as an adult (in which case the state Department of Corrections will consider releasing a photo). Commenters have provided this MySpace link which they say is his – it includes a small photo (and profanity, NSFW). What you see at left is a section of the publicly accessible state court system webpage showing some of the cases against Hailey; others not shown date back to 2002, when he would have been just 12. Meantime, we checked with the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office to see how last night’s incident might affect the Friday sentencing scheduled for Hailey after a plea deal in the November Admiral incident (prosecutors didn’t have enough evidence to prove he was in the burglarized house, so the guilty plea was for criminal trespass); spokesperson Dan Donohoe tells WSB, “Eluding police would violate part of the plea agreement, and if there is probable cause that he eluded police, then we would use that as a basis for requesting a longer sentence.” We’ll continue tracking this through the day and will add any new information as we get it.

12:33 PM UPDATE: Just talked with Sgt. Sean Whitcomb, who runs the SPD media unit; he says the department’s current policy is that it just doesn’t release mug shots except in circumstances such as, a particularly violent crime is involved. So still no mug shot. But a WSBer has uploaded what they say is an old school photo of Hailey to Twitpic; grainy but you can see it here.

I was able to do some research and find an old school photo of him looking a little like Napoleon Dynamite. Go see my avatar (soon) in the Forums.

Hey doods!! This is so intense!! OMG I saw the helicopter last night and then it left. I thought it was because they found him. Did they find him?

Not yet – we are now pleading our case for a mug shot to the media unit – TR

This is just ridiculous. how many times has his name been associated even on this site. And his g/f will be posting soon to “defend” him. i’ll look for your avatar Irunkandji

I just checked out the avatar in the forums.

That is brilliant – the avatar has a clear photo of him.

Oh! and though I’m new to the whole Twitter thing, I’ve uploaded the photo to Twitpic. Search for it under IrukandjiWSB. Larger than the avatar photo.

What a loser! He will get the chance to see how tough he is when he FINALLY gets sent to a real jail.

Anyone know where Kelsie moved to? Is she around town or did she really move to Tacoma?

I think that the whole thing is tragic. An 18 year old with a rap sheet that long is a troubled person. I want to be safe, and I want due justice, but I find it tragic on all sides. He looks beautiful in the Twitter poster – such a shame.

When he finally gets sent down, I’m sure is new friends will find him beautiful too.

  • rykrite April 22, 2009 (2:53 pm)

Cruiser, I’m sure you’re right. And I find no happiness in it at all.
He was once an innocent child – all children are innocent. What happened in his life to teach him that this was the only way?

Maybe nothing “happened” to him. Maybe somewhere along the line he decided this was easier than getting a job. Some kids are bad because they have a lousy, messed-up history. Some kids are just bad because they’re stupid and lazy.

I live near the area where this guy hangs out. The cops are out on patrol showing his mugshot and said to call 911 and give them details of where he is if you see him. So if you live near an area where he might be you will see the cops.

It’s heartbreaking to see that his first crime was committed when he was 12. Scratch that, he was first caught committing crimes at the age of 12.

The best thing for Skyelar might be to get caught before he gets into some really serious trouble. He is an adult now so he won’t be able to avoid punishment any more, but he’ll probably get a relatively light sentence given the nature of his crimes.

Maybe that will prevent him from the inevitable fate that awaits him if he doesn’t. Looking at his photos, I can’t help but feel for him, right now he is being driven by a combination of way too much testoserone and adrenaline in his bloodstream, along with circumstances that keep piling on top of each other. He will be far better off checking himself in before those circumstances lead to complete self-destruction.

Beasley, I’ve never met the ‘stupid and lazy’ kind of child that you refer to. I’ve met troubled kids aplenty, but I wouldn’t label any of them stupid and lazy. But if a kid gets called stupid and lazy enough times, often they don’t find any sense in trying to prove otherwise, when life seems so senseless to them.

I am very upset at the militarization of this conflict. Tell me an 18 year old can evade 6 patrol cars and a helicopter and the only result is a lot of wasted time, money and energy and I am perhaps others in the neighborhood wonder why “we” are being terrorized at 1am with the sounds of war. Is this suspect known to be violent? Since when does robbery require such incompetent and heavyhanded response? I say park that chopper and put some of those blue suited donut eaters on their feet.

One of the warrants out for him is for violation of a domestic-violence protection order (in other words, an order for him to keep away from someone against whom he committed DV). Harassment and reckless burning are just a couple other charges, grazing the top level of the online court orders – I’ve also just come across one of the cases in which it appears a warrant was issued, a “violation of sentencing conditions” case from something that originally was in court a year ago, researching that further – TR

  • rykrite April 22, 2009 (8:07 pm)

JD, it was an on foot case, too. There were K9 units and officers on foot, in addition to the chopper et al.

I was on California for 20 minutes and all I saw were a bunch of cruisers circling the block and that chopper trying to make noise. How is it this guy is in the justice system for 6 years and the end result is escalating hostility and a cop chase. I grew up with with a bully at my bus stop who was the product of a domestic violence childhood. He was gunned down one night in a chase through my neighborhood. No one ever wrote his story. Perhaps someone should investigate the increasing number of gang tags with KK “Kop Killer” on them in the neighborhood? Is this part of a wider, more organized conflict based on race?

Sorry, comment time is over.
