Admiral Neighborhood Association: New concert series revealed

We’re at the Admiral Neighborhood Association meeting, where Katy Walum has just discussed plans for a new summer concert series – six Thursday nights outside at Hiawatha Community Center in July and August – and she’s starting to look for music acts, “classy” like jazz and folk, as well as seeking businesses to sponsor the series – contact her at katy.walum@gmail.com. More shortly, including what ANA attendees heard from Councilmember Sally Clark.

More outdoor music is always a good thing. But “classy” music? Does that mean innocuous and boring? For some reason, whenever I hear the word “classy” used to describe something it turns me off.

Sorry I didn’t transcribe the entire discussion but, as opposed to really loud music, like some genres of rock, heavily amplified. The context was that there was controversy, apparently, over some of the outdoor concerts in the area last year (one at Alki Community Center/Playfield in particular) so they had been working out those concerns while planning this, given that residential areas adjoin Hiawatha too – TR

I would love to see jazz/blues singer Mercedes Nicole at this event! She practically channels the spirit of Nina Simone and would be a GREAT artist to have in a line-up like this.

Michael Powers is another wonderful artist and he lives in West Seattle!
