West Seattle Crime Watch: Would-be mail thieves?

From the neighborhood east of Lincoln Park, an alert about two early-morning sightings of apparent would-be mail thieves:

Here’s what J & E report:

2nd night in a row at the intersection of 45th and Hemlock (a couple of blocks East of Lincoln Park) [map] where there has been suspicious activity around neighborhood mailboxes.

Around 315 a today, woke up after hearing car(s) speed up Hemlock. They were hanging in front of our neighborhood mailboxes and tried to open them…don’t think they got into anyone’s mailbox as nearly all of them have locks. Shouted at them……it didn’t faze them much. Called the police, they showed up after the group left.

Two cars worth of teenagers….4-6 of them. One was a small white hatchback and the other was parked in front of our house, so I couldn’t see it very well. Last night around 2 am we had a similar incident, but the group was in a different car……not sure if was the same group of teenagers or strictly a coincidence.

If you’re concerned about mail theft, here’s the official US Postal Service advice on deterring it.

You said the magic word-locked! No one should have a mailbox that’s not locked. Mail theft is very high in the Seattle area.

Several mailboxes at my apt complex were broken into, and they do have locks. Filed a report with the USPS, but don’t expect to hear anything soon. Also called the police but they said it wasn’t an emergency and no one called back. Locks are nice, but they can’t promise that your mail will be safe. be careful.

Sorry, comment time is over.
