After the snow: This Portland story might sound familiar

The Oregonian in Portland published this story online last night, but we just caught the link through a Twitter mention — the aftermath of their city’s even-more-epic snow. Notable revelations: Portland plows NO secondary streets, but does have 50 snowplows (almost double the Seattle number). However – this earlier article suggests they had some plow trouble and bus trouble too.

How is it that Portland has twice as many plows. Do they normally get more snow then Seattle? Pike and Broadway was a disaster on Capitol Hill.

According to most of the statistics pages I checked, Seattle gets a few inches more.

Its not just snow, its the ice that Portland gets more than Seattle from the cold air traveling out of the Columbia River gorge from EWA and EOR that really messes them up. Turns a relatively minor snow storm into a ice rink, and if its raining and that cold air is in place, they’re really messed up.
That’s why in this recent event chains were required there where here it was strictly voluntary.
