West Seattle Crime Watch: Car break-in and near-theft

Drury shares the “nerve-rattling” story – read on:

Just wanted to alert folks in my neighborhood about a car prowl. I live in the 7500 block of 15th Ave SW (map). My roommate’s Acura was broken into, late last night or early this morning, in front of my house. They rifled through the car and were able to open the trunk. They grabbed some canvas notebooks which contained a couple bank receipts (yes, the accounts are now closed). However, it’s clear that they “intended” to steal the car (they removed the casing on the steering column, and then inexplicably stopped).

Needless to say, it was an aggravating and nerve-rattling violation. My roommate had to take the day off, close his accounts and talk to the police….but there’s also that horrible lingering feeling of “who did this and will they come back”? We’re both feeling kind of vulnerable.

I just wanted to get the word out to the folks who live in my vicinity.

Sorry to hear you got hit. And thanks for letting WSB know. That was a good thing to do.

FYI, if you did not already know: You are within the Highland Park Action Committee boundary. They just happen to have their monthly meeting next Monday night at 7 PM at the Highland Park Improvement Club @ 11th and Holden (the big grey wood place).

This is the kind of thing that gets discussed. You and/or your roommate will be welcomed, if you attend, to share your experience. You will meet a few neighbors who care and can advise, eh? And, you will learn a few interesting and, perhaps, GOOD things about your ‘hood.

the neighborhood watch groups are getting better and stronger. This is good, because hopefully we can start making our areas safer. Just remember everyone, these days you should keep nothing in your car. I don’t even keep my change container that I use for meters in my cars any longer. I make it pretty clear that there is nothing hiding in there any longer.

be especially careful around summer or holidays. Most of these breakins are teens/young adults committing these crimes. time on their hands away from school gives them alot of oppurtunity. don’t even leave 50 cents in your car. To a possible drug user 50 cents is the start to funds for the next hit!

Sorry, comment time is over.
