Wildlife watch: Admiral District coyote sighting

Jessica wanted people in the area to know, so she sent this tonight:

Just saw a coyote crossing the street, 41st ave SW, a block from Metropolitan Market. Feeling afraid for kitties we spotted out.

Previous West Seattle coyote-sighting reports published on WSB are archived here. ADDED 11:56 PM: In comments on this post, Jenny mentioned a Lincoln Park sighting – she then sent us this photo:

ADDED THURSDAY AFTERNOON: Big Old Daddy sends word of another sighting:

Didn’t think to report this when it happened, but my son and I were at the kitchen table about 9 AM on Tuesday, Sep 2, when he spotted a coyote ambling down the neighbor’s driveway on SW Cloverdale near Fauntleroy Place SW. The coyote strolled up Cloverdale where another neighbor tried to scare it away with some pebbles. Last night yet another neighbor came over to ask if we had seen one of their cats – one who never misses a meal and may have become one. I’m pretty sure this is the same critter we saw lounging in a neighbor’s yard a couple of months ago.

if the address is correct, that’d be Admiral Junction – not too far from the ravine. They do love their dens hidden in the ravines – I would too. Saw an osprey the other day, which reminded me of one more thing I love about this town – it’s wildlife. Not quite as dangerous as Anchorage, but still pretty exciting. Would like to see more salmon, too.

Saw a youngster yesterday morning in Lincoln Park, walking along the Bluff Trail, just North of the main E-W trail from the parking lot. Surprised it, actually, & it trotted back to the park bench & scooted down the Western hillside, where I hear there’s at least one den.

On Monday night I saw a young coyote run out from the area of homes around 2128-2124 Fairmount Ave, make his way down Fairmount until disappearing in the greenspace on the opposite side.

so sorry and thanks also to the person who e-mailed me with the correction. metro market used to be a thriftway, so maybe some bizarre backlink in my brain led to the previously erroneous headline.

We watched two of them sauntering down the sidewalk on Lincoln Park way last night about 10. As coyotes go they looked pretty small.

We heard them yip-yip-yipping in Fauntleroy Park this morning at about 5. In my just awoken fog, I thought that a large group of people had congregated nearby to have some sort of bizarre laugh-in.

Exactly why my cat is indoors only!

It must be the latest crop of youngsters exploring their new world.

Good to see wildlife coming back to the Seattle area. To those that have pets and small kids, just keep your pets indoors or on a leash. As always, keep an eye on your kids.

Keep your trash put away as well as any of your animals food you might have had outside.

They’ve been yip-yip-yipping in Schmitz Park like crazy almost every night this week (they love waking us up in the middle of the night)!

I live on Hanford off of Admiral and have had regular coyote sightings in my neighborhood for over a year. I lost one of my cats two months ago and we found traces of his fur in the woods across from our home (the greenbelt between Admiral and the shipyard). This seems to be an area where at least one pack regularly travels and may even be where their den is located since we and our neighbors see or hear them in this area almost daily – at all hours of the day or night.
Just moments ago (930p), my husband and I stood on our driveway after seeing a coyote disappear into the woods when we drove up to our home. Within minutes s/he came back out to the street two more times before returning to the woods. Meanwhile to the other side of us, a pack of four coyotes emerged from the woods on their evening hunt.
I am a true animal and nature lover but am not thrilled about a pack of wild canines in my front yard. While I would like to be able to appreciate sharing space with these urban creatures like other bloggers, I also used to enjoy the squirrels and raccoons in the neighborhood that have all disappeared. I have two other cats who used to have a heavenly existence playing in the neighborhood. They are now confined to the house and I can’t keep my doors open for fresh air anymore.
I have lived in the Arizona desert where sighting a coyote in the wild was a magical thing. My reaction is far different in the city where the coyote population seems to be growing and they have less and less fear of humans.

Sorry, comment time is over.
