Coffee at the Heights update: Permit’s in, work starts tomorrow

Five months to the day after we first told you about Coffee at the Heights, which Paul Binder and David Robertson plan to open at 7349 35th (map) in their former PB&J Textiles location (that shop’s now in Fairmount Springs), next to their Olympic Heights Laundry — Paul sends word that the building permit’s just been granted and work starts tomorrow. ADDED 9:40 PM: A few more notes – Paul says they’ll use Caffe D’arte coffee, Sunshine dairy products, pastry provider TBA, hours 5:30 am-8 pm daily (including holidays), compostable cups/sleeves, and will be selling coffee by the pound. They hope to be open within a month.

What is going on with the coffee shop for sale across the street?

  • rockergirl September 9, 2008 (7:18 am)

The place across the street is still for sale (or rent I believe) – seems like a better place to locate since it is on the east side of the street and people on there way to work are more likely to stop – and there is parking out back. I wish Coffee at the Heights good luck since they have only on street parking on the 35th freeway – hopefully the neighborhood will embrace them as walk-in business.

While I’m not super-stoked about the coffee choice, I had a good Americano with that coffee brand yesterday…only wish I had remembered to get half-decaf (buzzzing). How can I get a request into the owners about having gluten-free options available in their food selection?

Glad to hear this actually happening! It appears they’re going to have to focus on walk-in business — hard to see how there’s much room for luxuries like chairs in what looks from the outside like a shrinkingly small retail space. Here’s also hoping that the coffee shop maintains a more fastidious cleaning regimen than the laundromat.
Would be great to see them — or anything at all! — in the coffee shop space across the space. The little retail area there probably can’t support 2 different coffee options, so it’s not clear where that leaves the other space. Of course, that space didn’t seem to be going anywhere, anyway.
Finally, as a fellow allergic person in the neighborhoods, I second the request for gluten and/or wheat-free options!

Gluten free/wheat free options noted! We chose the “wrong side” of the street because rent was much better. And as a note for the place across the street, we have heard there is an offer in on the building, but not sure where that is going because its also a coffee shop that did the offer.
Decaf will also be available for those that don’t want to be zipping around all day long.
Lastly we wanted to have some type of seating, small as it would be but our friends at health said no because we don’t have an ADA bathroom.
Keep the requests coming, we will do our best to fill all of them!

I live two blocks away. Hooray! Just fyi – if you offer a couple of treats (cookies, cupcakes, etc) in small sizes for people who just want a bite or kids, I’ll be much more likely to make it a part of the route when I walk my toddler. Welcome!

Will there be “Coffee at the Heights logo garments?

  • paul September 9, 2008 (8:55 pm)

Logo nulu, of course! Tote bags too, which you will get a free one with a purchase of a pound of coffee. Garments are ready….

Was the shop supposed to be open by now? Any new opening date?

  • WSB October 30, 2008 (2:10 pm)

Hmm, good question. We’ll check with the proprietors. Many of these projects tend to take longer than projected; nonetheless we feel obligated to ask for estimated opening dates anyway – TR
