West Seattle Crime Watch: Neighbors scare off car prowlers

From the WSB inbox, CB tells the story:

Our neighbor rung our bell this morning to let us know that our car, parked in front of our other neighbor’s house (new High Point, on Lanham Pl SW between Raymond and Graham) had a smashed passenger window.

We immediately went out for inspection and noticed an open glove compartment but nothing taken at all – just a lot of shattered glass. A little later our neighbor told us he saw some suspicious teens checking out cars parked in our street yesterday. He saw 2 maybe 14 year old boys and a young girl, maybe 16, she was the driver …

I woke up from some noise that night, and our neighbor confirmed hearing something around 4 am, too. Later we learned another neighbor heard the noise and shouted at them so they ran off. Thanks to him, nothing got stolen. But who is interested in stealing restaurant coupons, baby car seats and a double stroller from a old car anyway? And in front of a row of townhomes? Poor, stupid kids. We filed a police report and hope our insurance won’t charge us too much for getting our car glass fixed.

Neighbor-to-neighbor crime-fighting power is a good reminder of how helpful a Block Watch can be. If you don’t have one, you’re advised to get one – the Southwest Precinct crime-prevention page is the place to start.

We had a similar experience Saturday night. We live on the 4700 block of 25th Ave SW. We saw three 14-15 year old males “checking” handles on cars and confronted them. One ran and the other two were somewhat defiant and denied that they had been trying to open car doors. Turns out one of our neighbors had an attempted theft on his car 12:55 AM on Thursday the 28th.

I told the police that you witnessed the same thing as we did, but they only said ‘that’s very common’.

Sorry, comment time is over.
