Next Design Review meeting set for High Point project

Less than a week ago, we reported the Southwest Design Review Board told the developers of the 35th/Graham (map) mixed-use project it needed some work, so they’d have to come back for a second round of “early design guidance.” (WSB coverage here) Today, the city website shows the date for that has just been set – it’s been added to the agenda for September 11, which already had the next review for Spring Hill (BlueStar‘s mixed-use building at 5020 California, south of The Junction). Both projects will be reviewed that night at Hiawatha Community Center5020 California SW at 6:30 pm, 3420 SW Graham at 8 pm.

I hope the meeting at Hiawatha Community Center means the Southwest Design Review Board intends to rotate its meeting locations and stop holding ALL of its WS reviews at the police station on Delridge. I think the police station is a logical public meeting place for many people affected by projects on or east of 35th Avenue, but it’s not convenient for people affected by projects on or near or west of California Avenue.

In the past couple months, they’ve been at Denny MS, High Point CC, and a few others that escape me. The one AFTER 9/11 is 9/25, with two projects on the docket, and it’s set for SW Precinct. This webpage

identifies SWP as “the” spot for the board but of course some city pages are way out of date. I’ll ping a person or two and ask. The projects on any given agenda could come from completely opposite parts of WS, though. At one point 9/11 was slated for the Admiral Safeway meeting and I wondered if Hiawatha had anything to do with that, but that project’s since moved to 9/25.

Do I have this right: The September 25th design review meeting for the new Admiral Safeway store will be held miles away at the SW police precinct station on Delridge instead of being held at the Hiawatha Community Center right in the heart of the Admiral neighborhood and literally — and I mean literally! — across the street (Lander SW) from the Safeway development parcel that will be in discussion?
Yet another smooth move by the Seattle Department of Design and Planning.

Just to potentially give them the benefit of the doubt: The meetings are routinely on the second and fourth Thursdays, and sometimes the projects move around after the location is announced. In the case of the Safeway meeting, I believe it was pushed back two weeks at Safeway’s request. At any rate, I am going to see if I can find someone at DPD tomorrow to ask about the rationale of how meeting locations are set – seems like an interesting side note at the very least – TR
