Loud sound rattles eastern West Seattle – checking on it

We’ve received a couple notes about a very loud noise waking folks up early this morning in the Puget Ridge area. Nothing obvious on the 911 log and we’re checking other sources, but sometimes the best source of information is to just throw it out to WSBers, so if you know anything, please post a comment or e-mail us; thanks!

I live in the North Delridge area and hear that sound every few weeks. It’s coming from the Harbor Island area. It sounds like metal against metal with a lot of force behind it. I was picturing two boats grinding against each other or a container being dragged across a metal deck. I’d love to know what the real cause is and what we can do to make sure these sorts of noises only happen during the day.

Yep, if this is the sound I heard (live near Luna Park Cafe), it is a horrible, incredibly loud metal-on-metal screeching noise. I heard it this morning a little before 7:00 (I think? I was pretty sleepy). This morning’s was especially bad, but similar noises are common and annoying around here. It’s usually the steel plant, but sometimes sounds like a realllly badly maintained railcar in need of a lot of oil :-( I’d love for these sounds to not happen between normal noise-restriction hours, but who knows if that will ever happen, unfortunately.

Another North Delridge’r here… I’m not sure if it’s today’s mystery sound, but I hear the metal clanking that Joel describes fairly often too.

We’ve surmised that what we usually hear is dock and container noise from the port — the noise of containers being unloaded onto trucks or being stacked and restacked in piles on the pier…

I just heard lots of horns tooting for what seemed like an interminable time period. Made for a wacky dream, I’ll tell you that.

Very weird, but a coworker who lives in Mountlake Terrace was complaining that a really loud noise woke him up early this morning, sounded like an explosion, then car alarms going off. Couldn’t possibly be the same thing, could it? Maybe an plane with engine trouble flying overhead?

We are Pigeon Hill residents and we are sadly sort of used to these noises. This sound came after 1:00 AM and woke me straight up from a sound sleep. It happens quite often, strangely Sunday nights are when I notice it the most. This particular event was very loud. I’ve always felt it was coming from the Nucor Steel Plant but the Harbor Island ship scraping theory is interesting. Frankly it sounds a lot like a “Godzilla Vs. Mothra” sound effect.

The time frame cited by the people who e-mailed us was 5-something am. Industrial sound was my first thought, still checking though.

1:00 AM is about the time I was thinking of as well. We live a few blocks south of Nucor. The noise sounded like it was coming from the northeast. Then again, it could be Nucor and the sound was just bouncing off of Pigeon Hill.

I heard this noise today at around 5:15am. There were two distinct “bang” sounds, roughly 20 seconds apart. I live in the Puget Ridge area and could tell it was close by. Was just hoping it wasn’t gun shots, even though it sounded like it could have been.

I’d send Nucor a message to see if it was them- I found their e-mail address on their website before and got a response within 24 hours. I’ve heard a huge explosion type sound before (We live in Pigeon Point) but luckily slept through last night. When I contacted Nucor before they explained that it was from water on the scrap steel and that they were increasing the amount of covered area to help cut back on that from happening. I haven’t heard it in awhile. This was loud enough to rattle the windows… so maybe it is different.

Sounds like the monster from LOST… did anyone see a big black pillar of smoke?

I was in the Kitsap peninsula camping and we heard a really loud metal on metal screeching at about 1am. It was super loud. could it have been the same sound?

Sorry, comment time is over.
