Alki Car-Free Day: Here’s what Alki SW residents will get

carfree.jpg

Alki Avenue distribution of doorhangers about the September 7th Car-Free Day will start tomorrow, according to latest word from SDOT communications boss Rick Sheridan. He also just sent us a PDF of the actual doorhanger; see it here (the map above is from the doorhanger, which includes confirmation that the no-parking zone will be in effect in the Car-Free Day zone, California Way to 63rd SW, 10 am-6 pm that day).

    From the door hanger:

“Access exceptions will be made for residents along the corridor if off-street parking is available, emergency vehicles, and people with disabilities.”

maybe I am just reading it wrong or am confused, but shouldn’t it read..
‘access exceptions will be made for residents along the corridor if off-street parking is NOT available? ‘

thanks to WSB for links to other neighborhood blogs to see the coverage of car-free days in other areas, it’s interesting to hear about it.

They’re saying you can drive your car to your house and park it -if- you can park it off the street. Otherwise they will ticket and tow you if you park your car on the street in front of your house. If off street parking is not available you get to park your car outside of the ‘car free’ area and walk home.
    Happy happy joy joy!

I’m excited about this Car Free event! These don’t happen very often, but can help us to begin thinking about alternative forms of transportation. It’ll be so nice to walk along Alki without that deafening, unpleasant traffic noise.

  • Steph August 27, 2008 (4:00 pm)

Ya, all that traffic noise…hmmm? Now all you will hear is the distant sound of me enjoying my afternoon at home because I won’t be able to drive around without getting stuck in some weird traffic jam because of the car free day. If you want to drive to something fun try: Sunbanks Festival 9/4-9/7 or go to the West Seattle Farmers market from 10-2 on 9/7 or go to Port Townsend to enjoy the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival, 9/5-9/7. Whatever you do I hope you have fun with your friends and family.
    Cheers

As always, we will have a full list of what’s happening that weekend. One thing we have already mentioned – Cones for Kids will be selling ice cream at Alki Bathhouse that afternoon to raise money for a Children’s Hospital guild; they had already planned the date long before the Car-Free Day was announced and are hoping it won’t hurt their fundraising. So if you’re on Alki, check ’em out (they’re using Husky Deli ice cream, by the way) … TR

I haven’t yet decided how I feel about this whole thing. My main concern from the start, was how heavier traffic on other roads, and possible transit reroutes, would affect transit service over all in the area of the street closure.

    .

Bus riders are already doing there part by keeping a car off the road, and rely on transit service to hopefully be on schedule, to go places including to work. Many also must transfer at least one time, and need to be able to make those connections.

    .

What I don’t get is the parking issue. Especially the ticketing and towing on Capitol Hill. (The City has said they will pay all towing fees, and reduce tickets to warnings) ummmmm…..the people are parking their cars and walking, like they are supposed to do. Why can’t they just stay there? I’m sure there’s enough room for people to walk, with the remaining street space, and sidewalks.

Mike….so glad to see you posting. Your name was mentioned this evening, actually. We were wondering how you’re doing. I’ll take it to another thread in the forum :)

This whole thing is just another great Nickels boondoggle (sp?) I mean really, It is like, hey, we need a plce to have a party, so I like your place….

I say we park our cars for the day infront of Mayor Nickels house in North Admiral for the day. See how he likes that. I can’t believe they are actually going to tow cars. Makes no sense to me

5 cent lives in Admiral. Now this is making more sense.

I decided I’m going to plan a walk on 9/7. If you’d like to join me you can meet me at 47th Ave SW & SW Holgate St at noon. I will then be walking down Bonair Dr Sw to Alki Ave to check out the Car free day.
    Have a super day!

Sorry, comment time is over.
