Seen along West Seattle shores: Parking alerts, tidewalkers

At Don Armeni, parking restrictions kick in at 4 pm this afternoon, according to that sign and others. Not far away, parking is OK until mid-afternoon along California Way and Ferry Avenue, which have these signs:

Closer to the Alki business district, you’ll see no-parking signs which are actually for Saturday’s Seafair Pirates Landing extravaganza. (But don’t forget, as we’ve mentioned repeatedly, Alki and Harbor Avenues are going to be off-limits to all drivers but residents by late afternoon tomorrow – click here to read details.) More holiday coverage in the hours to come, and on our 4th of July events/infopage. Meanwhile, the lowest tide of the month bottomed out about an hour and a half ago; we surveyed the scene off Beach Drive across from Me-Kwa-Mooks:

Seattle Aquarium naturalists are out at Constellation and Lincoln Parks till 2 pm today and will be out again 11 am-3 pm tomorrow (-3.4 low tide at about half past noon tomorrow; monthly chart here).

Am I the only one who thinks “nudists” every time there’s a story about “West Seattle Naturalists?”

    Nudists? You’re thinking Fremont.

Did anyone else see the pelican flying northbound just south of Alki Point today at about 3:30? Thought I was seeing things! Pelicans Rule even if he wasn’t from around here. JW-Ditto for the thought on “naturalists.” I smile every time I hear that word.

PELICAN? REALLY? My favorite bird in THE WORLD and I missed it? Actually I was taking a nap at 3:30. Darn! That’s the one thing I miss about San Diego (where we lived a couple years before moving here in ’91) … the profusion of brown pelicans, soaring in “squadrons” over the shore. Out here I’ve seen them on the seacoast but never on the inland waters.

WSB-I’m from Ocean Beach in S.D. and grew up with the wonderful birds. I remember never seeing more than two together at any time, then as the 70’s progressed, we started seeing more and more until squadrons of them were on patrol daily. After the DDT ban in the early 70’s they came back fast. They’ve always been my favorite. During a windstorm in November of ’05 there was another one off Alki Point and he stopped to try some fishing for about and hour before moving on. I thought he’d been blown off course by that wind which went on for more than a day from the south. Wish I’d had a camera today…

Somehow I think we may have had this conversation before … but that’s where we lived ’88-’91. Orchard Ave., halfblock from the ocean, no view but who cares when you could walk a few steps over to the open area at the end of the street. (Maybe the DDT thing is why I don’t remember them from the previous time I lived in SD, from birth till age 6, in the ’60s … though also we were in Mission Valley then and didn’t spend much time at the beach!)

Sorry, comment time is over.
