Reader report: Truck rollover at west end of The Bridge

rolledtruck.jpg

That photo came in late tonight from Tim, who writes:

I happened upon the aftermath of a traffic accident earlier that left a pickup truck turned over at the west end of the bridge. The attached photo shows the truck, rear gate removed, and was taken about where the statues are at the west end of the bridge. The occupant(s) must have been transported by the time I drove past; there were three SPD cars but no other emergency vehicles on the scene at 8:32. Traffic was getting past, albeit slowly, in both directions.

911 call for this was not major so here’s hoping that means whoever was in the truck was not badly hurt.

i passed by right before the fire truck showed up and there were two guys standing by the truck talking…..the front driver side looked horrible, and ive been praying all night that the person inside was ok, i couldnt tell if one of the guys standing outside was the occupant of the truck but ive been thinking all night that it would suck to be stuck inside the truck with people standing around not helping you… right as i was going to ask the guys the fire truck showed up on the other side of the bridge so i really hope everyone is ok…i cant get the picture out of my head and hope you guys post the outcome of this.

It’s very difficult to get outcome info on crashes like this – medical privacy laws, etc. – but the 911 call did not bring out an extra unit, so I hope that was good news. Will doublecheck with the precinct tomorrow, at least in hopes they can tell us whether everyone survived.

Looks like they must’ve been going way too fast to roll over like that. And if that’s the case, they get no sympathy at all from me. People frequently drive like crazy on that particular stretch, so I can’t say, I’m surprised.

I heard all the sirens from my house by the bridge. it sounded major. Hope everyone is ok!

now now now…he/she who hath not ever driven too fast cast the first stone. Hope they are OK, that corner can sneak up on you.

Checked with the precinct, didn’t have any additional details but did say it wasn’t passed along at briefings as a ‘major’ incident so that at least means it wasn’t fatal.

With all respect to ‘B’, I honestly think maybe we shouldn’t be quite so generous. On many of WS’s streets, the problem simply is folks who drive like our streets are their own private Gran Prix course (ask David Della’s Chief of Staff — oh, he’s dead? Guess I’ve made my point). Speeding in a residential area is an arrogant display of “I’m the only one that matters, screw you” mentality. Using our streets in a motor vehicle is a privelege, not an entitlement.

Personally, I think all streets in West Seattle should have a 25mph speed limit, and if you are caught doing more than 10mph over the limit, the fine STARTS at $500, and goes north from there! Bet you folks will hang up their cell phones and pay attention, eh? Seriously, if you can’t be bothered to observe the speed limits and stay within 5mph of them, park the damn car; you’re not competent to drive!
