Helping local students: Today, tonight, and beyond

TODAY: The weather’s a little sketchy but if you were going to wash your car anyway, note that the WSHS Class of ’08 is having another Grad Night-fundraising car wash at the school through 2 pm today.

TODAY: Arbor Heights and Highland Park Elementary Schools are both having rummage sales under way right now (AH has a plant sale too); more here.

TONIGHT: The Sanislo Elementary auction, 5 pm, Holy Family. More here.

THURSDAY: Another WSHS benefit — the Foundation is raising money for visual and performing arts with an evening of dinner and theater (and a few extras!) on Thursday night, hosted by County Councilmember (and WSHS alum) Dow Constantine — read on for full details and ticket info:

The West Seattle High School Foundation will present its Fifth Annual Spring Dinner and Play on Thursday, May 8, featuring a student production of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.”

This fundraising event will be hosted by King County Councilmember (and Westside alum) Dow Constantine and emceed by Bill Swartz of KIRO radio 710.

The proceeds will benefit arts programs at West Seattle High School. In past years, funds have been used to purchase musical instruments, art equipment, digital cameras, and a multi-media projector for the high school theater. This year’s event will pay for equipment for the new WSHS Drum Line class and keyboards for a second music class. Drummers from the Seahawks Blue Thunder will join WSHS students for a performance at the dinner.

The West Seattle Big Band will be honored at the dinner for fostering lifelong learning and their generous support of instrumental music in area schools.

The event starts with a wine and appetizer reception at 5:15 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, then moves next door to the WSHS Commons for a catered dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the performance at 8 p.m. Tickets are $45 per person and can be reserved by contacting Constantine at dowconstantine@yahoo.com. For more information, contact Dick Lee at 252-0476 or rjlee@seattleschools.org.

Thank you so much for posting this! We’re hoping to bring some more community folks – in addition to alumni and current parents – into the circle of those supporting West Seattle High School and all of our public schools.

Speaking of which, also tonight is the Sanislo Elementary School PTA Auction at Holy Family, and (not in West Seattle) the Vashon Community PTSA Auction at the “K2 Commons”.

As my mother would say, what ever happened to public funds (taxes) paying for public schools? Well, good point mom. But the kids in school today can’t wait for us to fix a broken state funding system. They need our contributions now.

Sorry, comment time is over.
