Snow advisory canceled

OK, doubters win on this one. National Weather Service is out with the new “forecast discussion” which pulls back the snow forecast for just about everywhere but Whatcom County and cancels the snow advisory. Sorry, West Seattle kids, looks like school tomorrow.

hehehe…I certainly wouldn’t want to be a weatherman in Seattle this week – lol…

It was a little painful to watch my former co-worker Walter on the 10 pm news – just after I saw the snow advisory cancellation and posted it here, I went out to turn on the TV to see how they were handling it … he had to go through his whole snow panic forecast, after the live shots with folks on the Eastside where they HAVE had snow the past couple days, and then his trailing words at about 10:05 were “oh, and we’re just getting this new information, uh, the snow advisory is canceled.” It’s tough to spend the whole night producing a newscast based on one expectation that gets pulled out from under you at the last minute!

How did all of that running around like chicken little work out for everybody who was doubting Burton? :)

  • Jan January 29, 2008 (12:46 am)

Burton…no one was running around like chicken little. Everyone was just sharing information….like it was said before…if it’s of no interest to you, then skip it…it’s just like turning the channel if you don’t like what’s on.:)

Having said that, now that the advisory has been lifted, what I’d like to see is it really dump on us…hehe…it’s been known to happen…hehe…

Until I saw Burton’s “I told you so” post here, I was going to make a post in mock sarcasm of how I’d gone out and bought snowshoes, two weeks of provisions, etc, etc to carry me through the impending snowstorm WSB was reporting on.

    .

Instead, I’ll mention this, which I didn’t mention on the other thread. I’ve been out sick, from work, the last couple of weeks, and am going back today, (Tues) which is the start of my regular work week.

    .

I live in the Morgan Junction area, and work in White Center. I don’t have a car, so I rely on the bus. I catch the 22 bus to work, which goes up Gatewood Hill on it’s normal route. Now, I don’t do well walking in snow and ice, I’ll be 50 later this year, and am overweight, so I sure don’t look forward to taking a spill on a slippery surface.

    .

My normal bus stop is about 1/2 block away. If the 22 is on it’s snow route,it turns right onto Fauntleroy. Now, I can’t even depend 100% on which route that the 22 I want is going to run, even if I see one go past my window, the one I want may not. So, to play it safe, I have to walk up to the stop in front Chuck & Sally’s, which the bus will service no matter what. That also gives me the option to catch the 54, or 128 in case I realize the 22 isn’t going to show. But that means a several block walk on the White Center end.

    .

So, my point is, is that WSB’s reporting, plus the input from others in other parts os WS, is very benificial to me. As we know by yesterday’s storm, it’s very unpredictible. Some places, not too far from each other, had significantly different results. Being at the bottom of the hill, I’d sure like to know if there’s any snowfall, is it sticking, etc, at the top of the hill and beyond, so I can plan accordingly.

    .

Now, this is strictly selfish, and I’m not looking for sympathy, but as I mentioned, I’ve been off the last two weeks, and all I needed now was to not be able to make it in due to the snow. I have a Dr.’s note for the sick time through yesterday, but another day off could go against my attendance record, plus I’m not sure that I have anymore personal days left, after being off.

    .

My main point is, and I’m sorry to be so long winded on this, is for the reason’s I’ve noted, I appreciate having the warning, then the up to date, specific to our area, coverage. I don’t recall hearing one mention, from two different TV news sources, and one radio source, yesterday as to WS specifically, and I don’t like that uncertainty.

I don’t know if there was a run on the stores. It did look like there was a run on the West Seattle library. The new book shelves were the emptiest I’d seen them since mid-summer, everybody’s vacation time. Seattle’s own version of snow panic.

I’ve always said that you know it’s been a slow news day when the lead story on TV newscast is about weather.

Mike, I agree with you – I certainly wasn’t running scared on snow, especially since I said days ago that I was doubtful we’d get any. But I need to know if my buses are running, where they’re running, or how I’m going to get home or to work. If you’d simply listened to news reports the last few days, you’d think 100% of the Seattle area was blanketed in snow and ice. Many mornings while my computer warms up, I’ll turn on NWCN and hear “oh my god, the snow!” and then I’ll run to the window and see absolutely nothing. So it’s very helpful to know from people who are in WS what is going on in the different neighborhoods. (And Mike, hope you’re feeling better!)

Katherine, in NYC it was always the video stores that emptied out before the storm panic. Well, before all the 8,000 channel “on demand” cable systems, anyway. :)

Burton, I’m curious – have you also contacted the weather forecasters at the local news stations and told them that they were overreacting with snow?

  • miws January 29, 2008 (7:44 am)

    Thanks Sue!

I’m feeling alot better. But definetly need to get serious about losing da weight, instead of only making minor changes here and there.

Main thing is, I need to keep up on my asthma meds instead of letting them lapse, “because my breathing doesn’t seem too bad”.
