Schuck’s update: End of an eyesore, progress report

Experimenting with yet another video host – let us know how/if this one works for you – we’ve also uploaded the same clip to YouTube in case you’d rather watch it there (click for that version). Here, we captured the first moments of the backhoe biting into the building (click the pic to play the clip):

We also ran by a little while ago for this photo of the progress made in the past few hours – the facade’s all gone:

If you missed earlier coverage of what’s planned for this spot — per the city project page, it’s a two-story commercial building with retail, a restaurant (TBA as far as we know), and “medical-services offices.”

I remember when this burnt down- I was living just down the alley. My house and car smelled like smoke for a long time. Good Riddance!

    That is one satisfying video.

It’s sad to see such a piece of West Seattle history fall to the … Whoops, wrong thread.

    Can’t go fast enough …

Love the comments. JenV, or anyone, do you remember the year it burned? I’m trying to remember.. it seems like 5 years ago? Is that possible?

What was it, before it was?

GURNTD – a lot of answers.

Todd – we’ve been trying to look it up (this one, pardon the pun, was not burned in our memory, unlike other big fires such as the Thriftway blaze on our side of town a decade ago) – best clue we have found so far is city permit for temporary power “due to fire” dated fall 2003.

    Thanks JenV and WSB. Cheers!

    The fire was on 9-20-2003

My office is just down the block….. I had a friend driving by as the fire was raging and b/c they had the whole Avenue blocked off she called to say she thought my office was on fire!!! I’ve never driven sooooo fast…..

I was told that long long ago it was actually a grocery store. Now I’ve been around since Prairie Market days (I used to LOVE marking prices for my mom with those black wax pens), but I don’t remember what it was before Schuck’s. Lost my landmark now, too for clients!

I remember it as an IGA–swarming with Madison kids after school.

It was an Al’s Auto Supply before it was Shuck’s

Sorry, comment time is over.
