Bulletin: Burned-out Schuck’s coming down now

Just back with pix and video. Demolition of the building started about an hour ago. Here are two photos of the Demo King backhoe starting its work – video to come.

The demo crew also wanted to warn drivers that trucks will be coming and going over the next couple days, every few hours, to pick up debris, so the California/Charlestown intersection may be a little more precarious than usual.

I hope they don’t start so early tom’w as they did this morning (7:15 am) – I live a couple doors down and thought I was being awakened by an earthquake.. ;-) But I’m glad to see the building go!

    Awwww… Schucks.

Jan, it’s officially w00t (with zeros instead of O’s) according to Webster. :)

Don’t get me started on ‘w00t’. That ‘l33t’ speak is annoying. I’m old enough to have seen 3 or 4 of this little pig-latin kiddy sub languages come and go. It’s right up there with 13 year old girls cell phone text messaging short cuts. It’s something little kids come up with to seem all different from their parents, their own little language. Cute, but annoying when someone over 13 years old does it.

  • David December 13, 2007 (11:09 am)

Yeah Jan. Don’t you speak leet? Woot!

See, that’s shorter and works better as “language”…a form of scriblings used to pass meaning back and forth.

  • David December 13, 2007 (11:10 am)

Wow…I’m turned into an official granky geek. :)

  • David December 13, 2007 (11:10 am)

    (who can’t spell either)…make that cranky geek…LOL

  • Layne December 13, 2007 (11:32 am)

    Hip, Hip, Hooray!

Too bad they won’t put a temporary Trader Joes in its place for a few months. I’ll bet that they’ll fit 6 townhouses in the lot once Shucks is gone.

  • Jan December 13, 2007 (11:46 am)

David….daughter has been using “Woot” for quite sometime. If you say it, then spell it, that’s what you get…right? I don’t like the “oh, let’s be cute and put #’s in it” philosophy, for sure. And…grown-ups who post profiles , etc. using both lower and upper cases at random should be ..well, banned from the internet…hehehehe…..

so…I’ll just say “Yay !!!”, then – lol

I have been waiting for this day since the night that we watched it burn !

Layne – we mentioned the site’s future in our newly filed update post at the top of the home page, with the long-awaited (?) video – this is actually slated to be a commercial building, not townhouses, not even condos or apartments.

I tend to admire how our language changes and transforms to suit the times. The words and phrases adopted by thirteen year-olds sometimes gain such widespread adoption that they can help define years and decades. When I see people here road-testing some of these trendy words what it suggest to me is that they’re not afraid of new things and having a bit of fun. To me there is nothing more American than embracing what’s progressive and new. Those that sit back and criticize it always come across as nothing but salty, middle-aged people who resent the vitality and youth of teenagers and who feel left out of the party because they no longer have a grasp on what is modern and cool.

  • A.A. December 13, 2007 (12:28 pm)

Aidan, I’m told I say “like” ALL the time. I still don’t know I say it. It’s in place of “um or “er” apparently. “Awesome” and “totally” still pop out every so often.

I enjoy the fact that you can quite quickly grasp a person’s generation from their speech habits. Those who keep up either sound pathetically like they’re trying to be cool, or they simply sound younger and “with it,” depending on how naturally the expression is used.

In short, I tend to agree with you as long as the use of current slang isn’t forced-sounding.

Born in the early 70’s… can ya tell?

I had a friend tell me just a few days ago that the Petco store was now going in here in the old Schuck’s site – I wondered aloud about that being “for sure” or another rumor floating around and they told me it had just been decided in the last week or so – by whom, I’m not sure though…do you know anything more about this *possible* new development, WSB?

actually, it’s interesting that it’s just going to be 2 stories of commercial use. I remember when the new owners of the property went thru a big study, with interviews/questions for the neighbors next door to the north of them, anticipating apts/condos in that location. Things have changed, I suppose, which isn’t a bad thing.
