Slice of life at Shoofly Pie

Exactly 4 months after its opening, the Junction pie shop is featured in The Stranger today. We haven’t been there in a while. You?

Has it only been there 4 months? I feel like it’s always been there. Their stuff is just amazing. Service could be a little faster, but it’s still worth the wait. I was actually planning on going over there tomorrow.

The last time I went in there no one seemed to care to serve us, it was like they were just waiting to go home. Pie was good though, but pie is always good!

I agree Wes, pie is always good!

Went there this past weekend and got an early slice of the holidays. The pecan pie is great!

yummmm…Key Lime….my blood sugars go up just thinking about it :)

Glad to hear they’ve got pecan pie now – I saw it on a menu but they didn’t have any a few weeks ago, saying they were still working on perfecting the recipe. I always thought that was the one thing they lacked. Can’t wait!

i absolutely love the plain ole shoofly pie…rich and mild at the same time! and i love batdorf and bronsons coffee! yay!

While more rustic (and pie oriented) than Bakery Nouveau, I find myself going to Shoofly a lot more these days as the line at BN is ridiculously and unreasonably long. As good as BN is they are becoming a victim of their own success. Even off-peak times are busy now. Until they figure out a way to streamline their transaction time or perhaps add another register they’re going to continue to lose business. Shoofly’s stuff may not be as sophisticated or dynamic a selection. But at least the customer experience is a bit more civilized.

Aidan, I’ve tried BN a few times now and have been unimpressed with it. For that price point, I’m happier with Shoofly. As for streamlining transactions at Shoofly, I did recently see a sign there advertising help wanted – maybe they’re working on that. One thing I wish they’d do at Shoofly is put in a microwave. I know they don’t want to ruin the intregrity of their product by microwaving it, but using that little oven of theirs to heat quiche and pot pies takes *forever* and I constantly have to go back and tell them the inside is not warm. I would love an alternative, to get it quicker. As a result, I only order those things to go and heat them myself at home.

we were up there this past weekend, had a slice of pecan pie. it was the best slice of pie we have had! it was quite tasty…even ordered one for the road!

We went there shortly after it opened and the service was lackluster. The woman behind the counter offered no greeting, relunctantly told us the type of pies, and appeared to not know how to cut a pie. We tried again last weekend and the gentleman that helped us was much better. The pie itself was yummy but the crust was a little on the tough side.

We went there a few weeks after opening. Got the chocolate creme pie and could only shrug and say it was OK. We thought the crust was tough, chewy and a little bland. I guess I like a thinner flaky crust with more salted butter flavor.

Im not impressed at all – service and atmosphere are so flat – pies were okay but the presentation and overall feel is just BLAH

I heard they refuse to take debit or credit cards if the charge is under $5.00. I think that’s just the cost of doing business, any thoughts?

  • grr November 15, 2007 (5:06 pm)

I’ve often heard that the service charges by cc companies are too much..I’ve run into a number of places that simply won’t take a debit/cc charge under a certain $ amount…usually small resturaunts.

Credit card fees are ridiculously high on low-volume merchants, and a one-location pie shop is a low-volume merchant.

That said, the pie’s great. Service is a little slow but, come on folks, it’s pie. Something meant to be savored and loved. If i have to wait 2-3 minutes more than i would have if things were better laid out, i just see it as an investment in pie. Java Bean isn’t the fastest coffeehouse, but the coffee’s great. (The Hotwire kinda wins because they’re FAST and just as good. But i can’t walk to the Hotwire from work.)

Great pie! I think I’m hooked on the chocolate creme. Best crust since mom’s! :0

Check out the art work too. A great addition to this little shop.

Looking forward to a field trip from Capitol Hill for Shoofly. So, what exactly is a shoofly pie? Makes me think of cows, fields, grazing — not yummy pie.

Sorry, comment time is over.
