Liberty sooner or Liberty later: Meeting #3 tonight

One year ago tomorrow, the old Alki Statue of Liberty was taken down and trucked away. nwartsstatuephoto2.jpgTonight at the monthly Alki Community Council meeting, it’s a third round of discussion about what could, should, and might happen next. (This follows two meetings in the past 8 days organized by community members Libby and Paul Carr, who are trying to re-start the project to build a plaza around the recast statue; here’s our report on the first meeting; a WSB reader’s observations from the second one is in the comments here.) Parks Department rep Pamela Kliment, who’s collecting public comment on all this, tells us she’ll be at this meeting after having to skip the last one; so will the Carrs. It’s an important debate about a West Seattle icon; get in on it by going tonight (7 pm, Alki Community Center) or by e-mailing Kliment (click here).

Unfortunately, there was not enough time on the ACC meeting agenda tonight to have a real discussion. I would’ve liked to hear more of the various opinions, as I haven’t formulated my opinion yet. But, there will be other opportunities, including a meeting coming in Sept sponsored by the Parks Dept.

I wasn’t able to go to the ACC meeting and am anxious to hear what’s what.
I suspected that there wouldn’t be much of a discussion re the statue at the meeting (just the new committee’s standard dog-and-pony show) since Jack Block was supposed to be in attendance with news of great developments around Piers 1 and 2, etc.
Anyone with any opinions formed about the statue from last night’s meeting please post it here. Would most appreciate it.

We are working on our post about the meeting right now and expect to have it up within a couple hours. Bottom line is that the parks dept. is calling a public meeting for Sept. 13 so it doesn’t seem likely anything will be decided before then. The statue thing did take longer than the Block presentation (which we also will post details of, later today).

Sorry, comment time is over.
