Hair, minus the spray

While the moviegoing world is fussing over this, an even-more-classic musical has just 6 more shows to go onstage at ArtsWest, and we’ve received unsolicited raves here at WSB. “Hair,” featuring the rising stars of the Summer Musical Apprentice Program, plays this Wednesday-Sunday.

If you’re, oh let’s say, under 40, you might not know “Hair” was the hottest show of the ’60s, and still timely today. The photo above (courtesy ArtsWest, taken by mattdurhamphotography.com) captures the psychedelic-ness of it all. Now, about those raves — click ahead to read ’em (followed by online-ticketing info, and even T-shirts …):

One WSB reader wrote:

I didn’t think HAIR could outperform last summer’s Cabaret production, but it was equally as good. The vocal talent of these young performers is truly impressive, verging on professional. The dance choreography, live band accompaniment, and enthusiasm all carried the production through to a haunting and spirited finale. Timely, poignant, thought-provoking, and just all around entertaining. Leaving the theater, a patron in front of me said, “I . . . am . . . speechless.” You will be too.

Another unsolicited rave:

All those who came of age in the late 60s, and everyone else, should not miss Arts West’s joyous musical production of HAIR. It rocks!

Remaining shows are Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat @ 7:30, plus Sat & Sun afternoons @ 3. Online tickets here; T-shirts, hats, even fridge magnets here.

I saw this during the WS Festival and highly recommend it. I was blown away by the talent of the actors and it was a tremendous amount of fun. And you can’t beat a $15 ticket for a 2 hour play. That was the first production I’ve seen at ArtsWest and plan on going back for more

Have they edited the show? Since it is performed by teenagers I assume there is no nudity? I am trying to figure out if it is appropriate to bring my 8-year-old this weekend.

The ArtsWest info (click the link in the story) says “adult themes” but NO NUDITY.

One of the male cast members did “moon” the audience, but nothing other than that in terms of nudity. Some of the acting is a little sexually suggestive, grabbing of crotches, thrusting – “adult themes” for sure. I don’t have kids, so I’m not the best judge of what’s appropriate for them, but wanted to point this out to help your decision, t.

Sorry, comment time is over.
