DECEMBER 31-JANUARY 1: From Emerald City Wanderers: You’re invited to send off 2009 and welcome 2010 with free, non-competitive walks on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in West Seattle . These walks are great for families and friends looking for a healthy way to celebrate the holidays. On New Year’s Eve, walkers will start between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in the Admiral neighborhood, 3050 California Ave. S.W. and walk either 5 or 10 kilometers (3.1 or 6.2 miles). The 10-kilometer route will head down to Alki and back around Duwamish Head for great views of neighborhood holiday lighting and great nighttime views of the Sound, the Harbor and Downtown. The 5-kilometer route will be less rigorous, with good views but avoiding the walk down to Alki and back. The New Year’s Day walks, 5 and 10 kilometers, will feature views of the City, the Cascades and Olympics, and the Sound. Walkers can start anytime between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Hot food and drinks will be provided by St. John’s parishioners on both days. Donations for the libations will be appreciated. This event is sponsored by the Emerald City Wanderers, a walking club affiliated with the American Volkssport Association. IVV credit is available for a fee.
