Strange, but on the power pole on the NW corner of SW 39th and SW Thistle, there’s a new, obviously wireless connected, box. It doesn’t look fully connected, but I wonder if this is a future camera? Is this part of the city’s broadband initiative? Maybe aliens? ;) Just curious if anyone knows what this thing is.

This is too vague. There are many types of boxes mounted on utility poles for various systems. Some are just connection points and some are where power is injected to boost signal strength and some are part of the city that police and EMS use.

Many new wireless installations (usually commercial) going onto utility poles. They’re beige-ish and nondescript boxes. Anyway, we’re just a few blocks away and heading out on stories shortly, will run by to see if I can see anything obvious.

… If you mean the white box with what looks like vents on the side, I’ve never seen (or noticed, at least) anything like that.

Yes, that’s it. It’s about 18″ square by 8″ tall, white with vents on the side. There’s a rubber ducky antenna on the top and a longer metal antenna with coils on the bottom. Definitely looks wi-fi related. I’ll keep my eyes open to see if there’s any others around.

The pdf here about utility pole attachments has required ID codes and a reference table. http://www.seattle.gov/light/poles/

There was this project with cell signal boosters, although 39th and thistle wasn’t listed at that time.

UPDATE: Cellular equipment work planned on utility poles in West Seattle neighborhoods
