LegoebayMemberAnyone else hearing a weird pulsating humming sound in the vicinity of High Point/Camp Long? It sounds oddly industrial, and it is definitely outside. Low pitch, and it has been going on for probably the last 30 minutes

LegoebayMemberI’ve lived in WS at the same location for five years, and this is the first time I’ve heard it. Creepy.

miwsParticipantYeah, it’s really weird. I’ve never heard it, AFAIK.
When I lived in the Morgan Junction area, a buddy of mine that lived across the hall would hear it occasionally. People have different hearing abilities when it comes to some sound frequencies.
That goes back until before I ever saw it mentioned here on WSB.

BigRedMemberI’ve never heard it until this weekend. Always wondered what it sounded like, now I wish I still didn’t know. It is VERY annoying.

oddrealityParticipantWe heard it at our house also, north of Morgan Junction.Have lived here for 30+ years and this is the first time we have heard it.Two nights so far but the longest and loudest was Friday night.Had to close the window to sleep.Thought at first it was a large fan someplace close by as it got louder then softer like an oscillating fan would do. Not that,it was just the WS hum I guess.

NoGoodMemberWe been hearing it for 2 weeks off and on, and its got to the point that its putting my wife in a bad mood giving her headaches .

MrsLMemberMetrognome: That’s hilarious! I’m in Highpoint and can hear the hum through closed windows. It’s louder on the north side of the house. Today is the first time in a long time hearing this sound.

WSBKeymasterOh thanks, I think it may be the power of suggestion. Now in Upper Fauntleroy, with a window open to the east-facing back yard, I’m thinking I hear something ambient out there. Or maybe it’s just the teenager’s computer…

LisaHParticipantWell it’s back and worse than ever! Does ANYONE know what it is yet? From my bedroom the last 3 nights it has sounded like a circling helicopter!
September 3, 2012 at 5:37 pm #769592
elikapekaParticipantDon’t hear it now, but could hear it late last night (around midnight) in Sunrise Heights from the east-facing side of the house. I’ve never heard it before in all the years I’ve lived here.
September 3, 2012 at 5:47 pm #769593
LisaHParticipantWSB.
I’ve been in Sunrise Heights for 50 years and just started hearing this a couple of years ago. I can tell you that I hear it almost monthly, toward the last weekend of the month. Some months I don’t hear it. Time of year doesn’t seem to matter. It HAS been getting louder the last few times I’ve heard it. At first my son thought I was nuts, but he hears it now too. It’s NOT power of suggestion and I would love to know what keeps me up all night. I sent a letter to the Mayor this morning I was so desperate!.

SmittyParticipantIn this day and age it is ridiculous that we can’t get to the bottom of this. Stick Jesse on it!
The water tower in our neighborhood “hums” occasionally, but not sure everyone lives within earshot of one.
It seems to be more “south” than “north” west-Seattle. Does the South Park garbage dumb do something at night that the wind carries West?
Some kind of airplane manufacturing or repair work from Boeing Field?
Wind vibrating power lines?
We need to figure this out – because if it was me hearing it – it would drive me nuts!
First thing I would do would be to track wind direction with sound observance to get a general direction.
Good luck.

anotherwsmomParticipantWe hear it all the time in High Point. We’ve lived hear for almost 5 years. It’s REALLY annoying.

BigRedMemberHearing it now

JenniferlouiseMemberI can hear it right now…oscillating fan is a great description. It’s seriously loud and kept waking me up last night. I had to google humming noise to see if anyone else had been hearing it.
September 4, 2012 at 5:29 am #769598
trickycooljParticipantNot at Boeing Field, no significant testing going on locally right now.
September 4, 2012 at 5:55 am #769599
WSBKeymasterDidn’t mean to imply “power of suggestion” for anyone but myself. That said, I just got another e-mail about it and I honestly think I can hear it again out there. Going to drive eastward and see if it gets louder. Kinda crazy maybe, but we spend much of our time chasing things down …
September 4, 2012 at 6:14 am #769600
elikapekaParticipantYeah, it’s really loud tonight. Sounds north and east of Sunrise Heights, but it’s kind of hard to tell.

inactiveMemberI walked the greenbelt today above Lafarge Corp on W Marginal. Very loud yesterday and today even from afar, but the sound grew so very loud and clear right above their plant that it clinched it for me.
But I also think that other industries and manufacturers create other periodic noises as well.
BTW, I am not 100% certain, but Lafarge has yet to comply with EPA fines from 2010 for spewing out benzene mercury and other sorts of nasty poisons into the wind which also happens to carry some weird noises to some of your locations around the area too. Not a very pleasant thought, to be sure.
Anyway, I am betting that this current “bout” of weird noise is brought to you by river industry.
September 4, 2012 at 6:58 am #769602
oddrealityParticipantIt’s definitely back and louder than last night.
They had better not be spewing any poisons all over W. Seattle!
