richwseattleParticipantI go back and forth on wishing Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, just because I’m kinda random anyways and it’s the intent, not the words, that matter. It’s about fellowship, peace, empathy and good-will. I guess I should mix it up and utter the occasional Happy Christmas.
I’m a devout atheist and still I have fond memories of the Christmases of my childhood. If I had kids I’d keep the tradition going, like my father (also atheist) did. As a child I was aware of other traditions, and remember thinking how neat it is that so many people had different ways of celebrating the goal of being a better person.
What I wonder now, though: is it okay to say “Merry Christmas” to off-leash dogs in West Seattle? Opinions, please.

JeannieParticipantRichwseattle, here’s what you say to the off-leash dogs: “Merry Christmas, cute dog. I hope Santa brings you a leash.”
P.S. While a previous commenter thought most Jewish people celebrate Christmas, I don’t think that’s correct. We don’t want our holiday to be absorbed into Christmas. And Hanukkah is not the “Jewish Christmas.” However, although I was raised Jewish, I would not be at all offended if someone wished me a Merry Christmas (though “Happy Holidays” is even better!).
But let’s try to be friendly throughout the year, not just during the holidays. If I say “hi” to a passerby as I take a walk, it’s gratifying (and common courtesy) to respond in kind.

JoBParticipanti don’t have a problem returning the greetings of off leash dogs since they seldom talk to me…
come to think of it.. their owners seldom wish me the best of the season either ;-)
most of the time i simply find myself saying… “and to you” … to whatever holiday greeting is thrown my way
after all.. who can be offended by someone wishing you well.. in any language?
