JoBParticipantOOps!
he walkthrough at Westcrest Park is scheduled today at 2 PM.. to look at the issues of safety at the dog park.
As much as i want to be there.. my body won’t allow it in this kind of weather… so unless it clears or pain meds do a better job than they have been lately, i won’t be able to be there.
I hope those of you who are hardier still have this on your calendar.

WSBKeymasterAlso for anyone concerned about this issue – Westcrest has an official Off-Leash Steward, Steve, who runs the Westcrest OLA Yahoo! group – as soon as I saw the forum post here this morning, I sent a note to that e-mail group (where we lurk) to let them know, but it was too late – Steve saw the note just after 2 pm, rushed up, and the delegation had left – I will be putting the group info into our main-page post; they work closely with park issues all the time as citizen volunteers taking care of the offleash area, and would be excellent allies in any ongoing attempt to deal with park issues.

WSMomParticipantHey friends:

Community members regularly using or walking through problem areas provides a “tried and true†method for displacing unwanted/antisocial behaviors. The more people avoid an area and leave it to those involved in anti-social or unwanted activity, the more the problems will dominate. If people involved in the activity feel they may be seen and their behavior will be reported, they will be less likely to choose that place as a refuge for that particular activity. Jane Jacobs, other community activists, sociologists and criminologists have researched the displacement of nuisance and illegal activity by community members, and shown how a few determined people can truly “take back the streets,†or in this case, a park. The concept is referred to as Community Activation, one of the strategies of “CPTED,†or Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, and used by neighbors and police departments all over the world.

I hope this isn’t against any rules, but I’ve copied my2cents comment made on the main page regarding Westcrest Park because I think it is important for all of us to read (click on the above link to read the write-up by our excellent WSB staff Patrick Sand and other comments).
I participated in the walk through on Tuesday and voiced my opinions to Cheryl Fraser from the Parks Dept. Cheryl instigated the walk through and is very open to ideas, suggestions and community action to improve conditions at Westcrest Park.
I’d like to float an idea out on the forum and hear what you all think. What if the big meadow above the dog park was improved into a soccer practice field and made available to Highline & West Seattle Soccer association? This would generate a lot more positive activity and exposure in the park. You can send your thoughts about this idea to:
Raft.Hollingsworth@seattle.gov who is our Ballfield Coordinator and Dennis.Cook@seattle.gov who is the athlete field manager.
Finally, I’d like the Seattle Mounted Police to ride their horses daily through the woods at Westcrest and cite any illegal activity. The horse barns are located right there next to the woods, this seems like a no brainer to me.

KenParticipantYes the MP’s should police the trails at WestCrest. Send the mayor and the council members an email to make it a request.
Maybe we can put it in a proposal form and send it up through the political channels.
