So on Sunday nights do all the train engineers in Seattle gather at Harbor Island to practice their whistling skills?

All night last night (by all night I mean from 12:30am to 5am) the trains horns were going non-stop.

What on earth could they be doing that require s them to lay on their horns like that?

I know that a group in Pigeon Point has been trying to do some community activism about this, I would love to hear an update. I live in the Admiral district.

Yes!! Last night’s noise was horrible. I live on Avalon and had the hardest time falling (and staying) asleep. I’m used to the noises from the trains, the steel place, and the recycling processor across the street, but they were all going at full force last night, making huge amounts of noise until at least 1:15 a.m., when I finally fell asleep. And this being my first day back to work after nearly two weeks’ vacation, I really could have used the sleep to power me through the day here… need more caffeine…

Wasn’t there a meeting a couple of months ago with the city to address the concerns of locals on this issue? TR – maybe you remember?

Yes, we covered several times, most recently when the neighbors went to City Hall last month:

I am overdue for an update. Will check with the citizens’ group as well as with councilmember Rasmussen’s office, although today is council meeting day and the mayor’s budget presentation, so it may be a little tougher to get an update from them. Will post here and on the home page when I find out. – TR

It seems like tonight will be the same as last night – I am already hearing the same long and repeated whistle over and over again. It’s not like it is a crossing signal two short, one long etc., it is just like one horn blasting away long, long, long, long etc. etc.

I am pretty noise tolerant, but I cringe at the thought of another night like last night. What the He** is going on?

well, it’s just about 12:15am , I’m in the Admiral District right by Safeway…and I can hear the trains loud and clear. While they’re just background noise to me, I can imagine how annoying they are for those who live closer, like on Pigeon Hill, farther down Admiral, on Avalon. They’ve been going for about 10 minutes straight now…

Has anyone called the Train companies to ask why the train whistles are going so long and through the night? I just saw a headline about the port slowing down and what effects it would have. So if the port is slowing down that would mean less trains. Right? Just wanted to know. I love the train whistles but I live near the junction so I don’t have to hear them except when I am outside. Hope you get some sleep.

A long shot – but could it possibly have anytning to do with diverted traffic from the Spokane St construction? I know there are train tracks near there, but not sure how it would affect tracks closer to W. Seattle. I’m in Highland Park and we hear them too at times lately.

we heard the train whistles last night. they seemed to go on for a long time and it seemed there were quite a few trains involved. This would have been around midnight.

Doesn’t solve your problem, but I’ve found using the huge, over the ear wireless headphones with music or a book on cd helps me over-ride those noises and fall asleep. I even have a pair of the construction type safety earmuffs. $18 at homedepot. Yes, you look ridiculous, but it’s a lot worse to go without sleep.

With a baby in the house, ear plugs are not really an option. I am not complaining about the noise in general, I am complaining about a sudden and dramatic increase in noise over the past two days. Aside from irritating me, it has also piqued my curiosity about why the sudden increase.

Vmd – wasn’t making fun of you. I’ve heard them too. I still think it has something to do with the Spokane construction.
