An arson here, a home invasion there, an uptick in burglaries, vandalism, gas thefts, and more, all of which makes me wonder if — as the economy and the country founders — we are witness to the slow psychological unraveling. With more pathology ahead. God I hope not.

I think a great deal of what you and I are feeling and the anxiety that most West Seattle residents are dealing with comes from the electronic age and it’s instant feeding of info to us.

Back in the day, you would never hear about a car break in, grafiti, or someone stealing signs. You might read a little blurb in the local paper a week later or through word of mouth from neighbors who live in the general area.

Now days, you can log on, and read about someone in Admiral getting a window broken out, somebody in Westwood getting a shovel taken, or dogs loose at the beach. It gets a little overwhelming and it sure gets me stressed (ask my wife) but this is also a tool for helping ourselves and our neighbors, and being more aware of what is going on and how to keep an eye out for each other.

ToddinWestwood is right, we are hearing more of it now…

but poverty and desperation breed crime…

and there is more of both now.

it isn’t likely to get better before it gets worse.

Crime in Seattle is actually down in almost all categories. If you don’t believe me then go to the SPD crime stats page which will show both all major crimes and all property crimes are down over the 10 year period of 1997-2007.

The perception of crime around you is heightened by what ToddinWestwood correctly notes as coming from the seemingly instant access to reporting of all crime (from very petty to the most serious).

    W. Seattle is no more dangerous today than it was last year or the year before.

Absolutely, Todd. How many of us were on the lookout for “door-to-door magazine salesmen” after it was reported they may have been casing for potential homes to break into?
