My sister and her family are moving from Tennessee to West Seattle and she is looking for any opening at any school in West Seattle. She is currently teaching art to middle school kids but is certified K-12 in Art and English. Any leads would be appreciated!

Teaching credentials don’t always travel so well. You’re sister will have to check with the Dept of Education to find out what she needs to do in order to transfer licensure – this only applies to public schools. After jumping through those hoops she’ll just have to apply see what jobs are available through the district websites. The downside is that jobs will be posted in April or May, I believe (though other opening ontinue to be posted through out the summer) and my bet would be that she will be required to have some credits of Washington History or something.

Private schools, however aren’t burdened with the same requirements and pay way less (how often is is that you hear of pay in the private sector being lower that in the public sector?)

I am not a teacher and, but I play one on TV. To be serious, my wife is a teacher and I’m just her idiot husband, but we’ve talked about this as it pertains to us fleeing this sodden region.

Parting shot; yay skool! We value edukashun!

    That is all…

Hi! I am looking for an art instructor to run an outdoor art program this summer at Hiawatha Community Center for kids ages 5-12. If this is something your sister may be interested in, please tell her to contact me: Diana.Feinson@seattle.gov

    Thanks!

Seattle district is in need of substitutes all the time.

    Two things:

    1) Much to the dismay of our overcrowded school buildings, WS school enrollment continues to grow. If your sister can wait until May, I am certain that many positions in WS will be available. However, she must get into the SPS computer system and the sooner the better.

    2) @ttt is absolutely correct! SPS and particularly WS is badly in need of high quality, available substitutes. This has been an issue for years. However, I believe that SPS hires a certain # into a general “pool” and then closes the applications. Make sure to check into it though. Good substitutes that create a relationship with schools should have a bit of a leg up in interviews.

    Good luck!

Hello & thanks to all that posted. My sister has already completed her WA state credentialing and has a license to teach here. Thanks for the heads up on credentialing! She also has an SPS profile in the system but has not had any communication from a human, only the automated system.

dhf0225-I will have Catherine contact you ASAP by email, she is currently on a plane to visit family abroad but I’m sure as soon as she checks in she would be delighted to discuss your opportunity this summer at Hiawatha.

Thanks ALL! So nice to know people are reading & willing to lend a hand. Love our WS community!!!

Tell your sister to not get locked in to only looking at SPS. My wife teaches in Issaquah school district and it’s a much better district to work for. Benefits and bonuses are amazing compared to SPS. It might sound far, but the commute isn’t too horrible b/c the school day starts and ends earlier than the worst part of the commute. Also, Highline is just south of us if distance is an issue. I can’t speak to any of the other districts, but many to explore: Bellevue, Lake Washington, Tukwila, Renton (I think?), Northshore, Shoreline. I’ve also heard Mukilteo is a good district but don’t know anything about it. I’d never want to commute north, but it’s an option.

ghar72-thanks for the tip on Issaquah, she interviewed with them last fall but those chose a local candidate instead. My hope is that someone on this forum we be able to give her an extra heads up and or a toe in the door :)

Bellevue sub positions are always open and Renton is desperate for subs. I subbed the last few years and constantly had phone calls. It’s a great way to get your foot in the door.
