searesParticipantOur new name “Taxeattle”.
No sanctuary from taxesMarch 27, 2017 at 3:44 pm #878323
J242ParticipantOther than income tax like almost every other state. I’d rather we have a state income tax and ease the sales taxes. Someone making $1 million a year buys roughly the same amount of goods locally that someone making $50K a year does. It’s disproportionate and those making 7 figures + should pay their fair share.

Michael WaldoParticipantExactly! Bill gates pays the same sales tax as a poor person does.
As a percent of income, this is way out of wack.
No reason not to have a state income tax and let cities have sales taxes for local services.March 29, 2017 at 12:52 pm #878515
searesParticipantDo you really think adding a state income tax will reduce any other tax?
They will just add a “FEE” to something else.
the city is just spend crazy. What we really need is to have some accountability for what they spend now.March 29, 2017 at 2:08 pm #878523
rwParticipantYes Seares, I actually DO think the existence of an income tax would reduce pressure on other forms of taxation, namely our sales and property taxes. It actually needs to make a big difference in sales and property tax rates, otherwise people aren’t going to support an income tax.
Also, accountability comes at election time — namely, how well did you manage the public’s money, Mr. or Ms. incumbent? And how does Mr. or Ms. new candidate plan to do things differently?
To do nothing but allow the status quo remain is a very bad option.

rwParticipantOf course as soon as I post, I come up with some of the information I was looking for before.
Go to the following article and scroll down to the chart labeled 2014 Property Taxes by County. Counties with higher property tax rates are darker, while counties with lower property tax rates are lighter. Hover over King Country and the property tax rate is 1.06. Hover over Kane or Dekalb counties, which are suburbs of Chicago, and you see property tax rates of 2.6 and 3.27. Yikes! And they have a state income tax and a sales tax. Even relatively conservative Dallas has a 2.41% property tax rate as well as a state income tax and sales tax. Compared to those types of places we should have a lot of room to balance the funding sources needed to pay for our state and local government. -
