grrParticipantOk..I need a smoothie for a hot summer day (ok..70 is hot for here)…Had me one at Hotwire…
YUMMMMY! Not full of sugar and crap..just great fruit, a little juice or soy…other options as well.
damn fine. Where do y’all go???

WSMomParticipantWe’re smoothie crazy at my house too. We make our own with strawberries, bananas, blueberrys, Nancy’s yogurt, and a couple ice cubes. Throw it in the blender and it’s a quick easy breakfast. So good!

inactiveMemberI make ’em at home most of the time. Can top off my drink right out of my own little blender. :) Favorite is vanilla ff yoplait, fresh cantalope, juice of a 1/4 of a lime, tbsp of orange blossom honey and soy powder. Yes…it HAS to be orange blossom honey or it doesn’t sing.
But, ya’ know the other evening when it was so hot, I went to Bubbles for the first time. I know. I know! It’s not a smoothie and I rarely go for this type of drink…but I was a bubble tea virgin and I was there…so I had the green coconut blended – no candie crap (who drinks candy? I don’t understand that) But, they were so good. OMG. Incredibly artificial – I know. I know! BUT. So so refreshing.

ErikParticipantSmoothies are the shiznit! Every morning I make mine after fixing the dog his breakfast. I had to plant my own blueberry bushes this spring since those are my berry of choice.

addParticipantI need to get back into making my own, but I can never seem to get the consistency right – it’s either too thick or too juice-like. That’s why I usually go to Jamba Juice. Gotta love that curbside service!
Glad to hear that Hotwire’s smoothies are good – I noticed the sign the other day so now will certainly check it out!
PS, WS Mom – I’m guessing ff yoplait is Fat Free Yoplait yogurt, I’m assuming the custard-style (which is my favorite).

inactiveMemberHey WSMom –
Went I started making them myself seven or eight years ago, I was able to buy GenSoy brand at a fair price at F. Meyer. GenSoy has a vanilla, choc and plain too, I think. They don’t use genetically modified anything, so if that’s a concern, you might want to try them. However, I soon discovered that I would get more bang for my buck if I bought bulk at Fred Meyer or a nutrition store. The trade-off is I may not be using unmodified soypowder…but I go through so much of it that I just couldn’t justify the $12 -$15/can for Gensoy. But, also, since I’ve been making them, many other canned brands have appeared which I simply haven’t bothered to try because I am OK with the bulk powder.
And, ff yoplait is simply fat-free Yoplait yogurt, sweetened with artificial sweetners, off the shelf at Safeway. But, gosh, there are a million types of yogurt out there to try…I just pick Yoplait because I like creamy yogurt with not too much tang that I can use for both smoothies and fruit/dessert. I can’t justify getting too spendy on the yogurt either, because I have about three servings a day….go through massive amounts of yogurt. I guess yogurt is just one of those very personal and subjective things.
;)
But, if anyone has better cost-effective offerings I’m not aware of, I’m open to hearing how they do it.

grrParticipantI like Jamba Juice as well..but it’s too far to walk :)
mmm..make my own??? That would involve actually going INTO the kitchen, right? I don’t Mrs. Grr would allow that…
:)

AimParticipantI’m a huge fan of smoothies.
Trader Joe’s or Cash n Carry for bags of flash-frozen fruit without sweeteners, Fred Meyer or Target for whey protein powder, and the rest is regular old Safeway.
I use:
1-2 cups frozen fruit. I love to combine blueberries and mangos
1/2 cup plain nonfat yogurt
1 scoop whey protein
splash of water as it’s blending to loosen it up if it gets too thick.
Occasionally I add a tsp of honey or a sprinkle of splenda if I want more sweetness. Or I just add half a banana.

JanSParticipantAim…I love the flash frozen fruit…it makes great “ice cream” in the Vita-mix, too. Instead of yogurt sometimes, add silken smooth tofu…gives it a nice consistency…:)
I’ll have to try blueberries and mango – yummmmm…so when exactly will those blueberry bushes be ready to produce, Erik? I may just have to make a sneaky trip down the hill…

ErikParticipantJan – At least I haven’t killed the blues yet. I’ve been hand-watering them every day, and have mulched them twice…I want them to live…lol.
I had some fresh strawberries I tossed in with the frozen blues this morning…yum!

flowerpetalMemberI make a smoothie every morning; and of course a pot of java! It may be a bit much for some of you who like your smoothies sweet; but I enjoy throwing in veggies too. Left over steamed carrots, sweet potato, steamed leafy greens, and last week I discovered that Ican toss in some basil leaves rather than letting them turn bad in the fridge. Yum!

JenVMemberthis makes me miss cat’s eye cafe. they had the best smoothies. I haven’t been able to find a comparable one since they closed. i will have to give hotwire a try…

BonnieParticipantI like to make smoothies a home too. I need a new blender though.
I like to put frozen fruit, banana, vanilla yogurt and tofu in for some protein. You can’t even taste the tofu or tell it’s there.

inactiveMemberJan & Bonnie –
I have never tried blended silken tofu – which is odd because I cook with firm tofu all of the time. I am going to pick some up and try it next time I hit the store.
There was a recent review, in The Weekly maybe?, of local fresh soy places. There’s a place down on 12th and Jackson, as I recall. I will try that!
Yes…I might be in a bit of a smoothie rut and this should shake things up :)). Maybe I should switch up my yogurt too…hmmmmm.
Thanks!
