I’ve started reviewing my voter guide. There sure are a lot of choices for District 1. Anyone (unassociated with the candidates) have strong opinions?

The Stranger endorsed Lisa Herbold. Seattle Times endorsed Phillip Tavel.

    http://www.thestranger.com/news/feature/2015/07/15/22545709/the-strangers-endorsements-for-the-august-2015-primary-election

    http://www.seattletimes.com/opinion/editorials/the-times-recommends-phillip-tavel-for-seattle-city-council-district-no-1/

Honestly I respect people on this forum (on both right and left) more than I trust The Stranger or Times.

This issues most important to me are growth management, transportation, jobs, housing, public safety, and making sure no hoodlums mess with my sweet new Subaru. So let me know what you guys and gals are thinking.

i know there are a lot of Lisa Herbold fans

i am not one of them

    though to be honest..

she is probably a good fit for your criteria

I tend to lean towards Tavel, based mainly on his science background, but I would be ok with Lisa Herbold as well. It’s tempting to vote for crazypants Pavel Goberman for the sheer entertainment value (but I won’t!).

My voting issues are transportation, crime, and civil rights; I’m a home owner, and I’m socially pretty liberal.

Lest anyone reading this be confused, she is not running in this area. She is in a district now.

Our ballot includes West Seattle/South Park District 1 plus the at-large (citywide) positions 8 and 9.

In addition to covering almost all the candidate forums this season (the first of which, we presented and moderated), we also have done a “Last Look” round of candidate interviews, one on one with each of the nine. They’re all up on the WSB YouTube channel currently and will be linked from a “so you’re making your decision” roundup on WSB within 24 hours along with other potentially helpful, West Seattle-specific info about the nine candidates.

Thanks for starting the topic, Skeeter, this is a historic election – the first slate of councilmembers in the new council will set the tone for a long time to come.

Added: The Seattle Channel’s Video Voters Guide is up too. Eight of the nine D-1 candidates participated:

I am not voting for Ms. Herbold because I feel that she mis-represents her qualifications – even on her yard signs. She has been a STAFF person to a Council member, which is much different than being elected. She has not convinced me that she knows how to think on her own.

I’m impressed with Mr. Tavel’s and Mr. Redmond’s grasp of the key issues. I think that they would represent West Seattle well. That said, there are 8 other Council members that District 1 has to get along with.

I’m concerned with livability, transportation and crime. I’m retired, own a home, and drive a car.

Herbold has been running as Nick Licata version 2, since she was a key person on his staff. If you agree with Licata’s accomplishments while in office, then you can feel comfortable voting for her.

I have voted for Licata in the past, but noticed that he and Mike O’Brien have been Sawant’s strongest allies. So if you approve of that alliance, once again I think you can feel comfortable voting for Lisa.

If, however, you don’t like the overall direction that this alliance is taking Seattle, then I’d suggest voting for Tavel or Braddock or one of the other candidates.

Skeets, this is going to be a tough call. I personally know Chas Redmond to be a logical and forward thinking person (former NASA scientist), with integrity.

Braddock is being backed by a big donor(s), which in my mind means someone will want quid pro quo?

Not sure Tavel would be better than me at this job so that’s unimpressive, cuz I would suck.

Herbold is as advertised so that would likely put her to the left of your solidly center/right SOP. :-)

The rest you can throw a blanket over IMHO.

This is going to be tight. Literally a few hundred votes between a whole gaggle of these folks. Might end up with hanging chads. ;-)

    Good luck to you, sir.

I’d been leaning toward Lisa, but lately I’ve been giving Chas another look. He’s been working as a community advocate for a long time – unpaid, far as I know. When a neighbor and I lobbied for street and sidewalk improvements, he was a supportive part of the process. I appreciate brains, and Chas seems a smart and steady kind of guy.

Politically, I lean left and progressive, but have a conservative streak when it comes to crime and some other social issues. I’m concerned about overdevelopment and lack of infrastructure, transportation, and lack of law enforcement. It’s a tough call, especially when every candidate seems to give a politically correct pre-set of opinions and disclaimers on many issues.

Well I did some additional researching and was leaning toward Shannon Braddock – at least for the primary. But then I looked through Chas Redmond’s endorsements and found a couple folks I really respect. So I’ll have to give more thought.

Thanks, WSB, I look forward to seeing all the candidates’ responses in your interviews. I didn’t know WSB had a YouTube channel.

    .

I do think this election is very important, since the city council will be making many important decisions concerning the direction Seattle will take in the coming years concerning growth. My biggest fear is that I will be eventually priced out of Seattle, even though I am a homeowner. My salary will never keep up with the cost-of-living increases the city is currently seeing. I love West Seattle and would hate to have to move out of the city. I am concerned with all the proposals for doubling levies that increase taxes for homeowners (i.e. transportation, housing), along with all the new levies being proposed or already passed. While I’m liberal and tend to vote for levies, the size of the increases and the number of new levies have been stunning.

    .

My most important issues are similar to Skeeter’s, although I have a 19 year old Honda instead of a Subaru. I aspire to a sweet new Subaru.

Agree with DCN and WSB. This election is very, very important. I’m happy to have the WSB to help voters sort through the candidates and issues.

I plan (hope?) to organize an informal/casual meet-up after the primary so interested folks can discuss issues and candidates. Forums are a great resource but I’m craving a real discussion over a coffee or beer.

anybody but Shannon Braddock; one of her donors is the new owner of Linda Manor (now Bauhaus, which doubled rents), who economically evicted all the long-term tenants, by raising the rent 140%; yes, I can provide sources (later; right now I’m off to an event in support of Jon Grant for the at-large position; Jon was Ex Dir of the Tenant’s Union, advocating most of his life for renters)

    ~

Lisa Herbold is the best advocate for the people of WS/SP; and she knows the inside of city hall; she’s been the brains behind Nick Licata for years; she reads everything and remembers; she can recite the history of city laws by memory; Lisa will be the bold leadership we need in city hall, for all the people, not just the wealthy

    ~

we do have several other excellent candidates in D-1; my good friend Chas Redmond, and Phil Tavel, and Brianna Thomas; all would be excellent reps of our neighborhood

    ~

THE #1 most important to me is affordable housing; I cannot stand to see any more of our long-time West Seattle residents forced out of our neighborhood due to sky-high rents; Lisa is the most knowledgeable re solutions to our affordable housing crisis, and tenant rights, and she will take immediate bold actions on our behalf

Since Herbold has been working closely with the Council for the past 17 or so years, she’s going to have to convince me she’s different from what we’ve seen from that Council these past few years. My concern is that she will simply be more of the same.

I’m looking most closely at Redmond and Tavel, so far – I like what they’ve said and like their analytical abilities and backgrounds.

OK, so I just saw another Braddock commercial – the one filled with platitudes like “she’s got plans to fix everything!” and yada, yada.

    I hate those. So patronizing.

And it was paid for by a PAC of somekind so you have to go digging for who they are, what their motive is for spending that kind of $ on her, etc.

Well, from what I’ve gathered so far, the $ behind her are folks from the Downtown developer cadre? Hmmm…methinks they have enough representation in the city already.

Think I’m definitely out on Braddock.

wakeflood; I was startled to see one of these Shannon commercials the other night on Bravo; and yeh, they rattled off who financed the commercial really fast (property management, landlord, real estate, rental housing…..); so yeh, the people who make the rents way too damn high; scary stuff

I’ve just received the third glossy, political crap card from Lisa Herbold in just one week.

Personally, I hate these things and find them completely worthless. The only reason I can think of for a candidate to send them is that they regard voters as being so dim-witted that they will automatically vote for the name they’ve seen most often, as they contain NO substance whatever (much like most candidates). They may be right about that, but it’s a slap in the face to those of us who can actually read and write – and maybe even think on our own.

But this onslaught of junk mail from the Herbold campaign tells me a few other things:

She’s a got a lot of money to waste. Where from?

She doesn’t give a rat’s ass about the environment.

She’s just another career politician (or rather, a knockoff of a career politician).

omg; really???? mailers are the primary way for candidates to share their message with residents who do not (or cannot) attend candidate forums; I’ve been to nearly all, so well aware that very very few people show up to hear the candidates in person; most of the candidates are sending out mailers; so if you’re gonna hate candidates for not giving a “rat’s ass about the environment”, spread your hate around to other candidates; I have a huge stack from nearly every candidate, and some candidates have sent several mailers; this is a brief period within 2 weeks of a critical election; much worse are the weekly-all-year-round-onslaught of grocery store mailers that apparently we cannot stop

    ~

Lisa has spent 100+ hours knocking on doors in WS since March, to introduce herself and hear what concerns are important to the people who live here; even with all those hours of door-knocking on evenings after her day job and on weekends, it’s still impossible for her or any other candidate to reach all the voters; housing affordability and tenant rights are huge, but many/most apt buildings (like mine) have security entry, so the candidates cannot get inside to knock on doors and talk to renters in person; the only candidate who can afford TV ads is the most conservative, who received ginormous funding from chamber (CASE), property owners/rental groups (I saw the commercial the other night on Bravo during “Flipping Out”); all the other candidates can only afford to reach voters via yard signs, mailers, knocking on doors, phone calls, house parties, and citizens who show up at candidate forums and/or actually do their due diligence research on each candidate

    ~

Brianna Thomas, who is awesome (renter/car-free and works in affordable housing) has sent out more mailers thank any other D-1 candidate, and she surely does NOT have a ton of money; I’ve received 5 from her, each with different messaging; this is how candidates reach voters; how in the world can you be so upset about candidates trying to share their vision of what they would do as a City Councilmember to represent you?

    ~

my most recent mailer from Lisa Herbold “Keep Lisa Working For Us” has a beautiful photo of her family, including her daughter and grand-kids, husband and step-daughter, who all live in Highland Park and High Point; part of the message “Lisa Herbold stands head and shoulders above the rest”; “As an aide to retiring Nick Licata, our city’s most pro-neighborhood City Councilmember, she has years of experience advocating for neighborhoods, communities of color, poor people, the homeless, and small businesses”; “We’re not exaggerating when we say no one inside City Hall knows more about housing and tenant issues”; published in City Living Seattle; “A social progressive with the skills to be effective on the Council immediately”, Laborers Local 1239; “Lisa has the perspective of an outsider ready to change the status quo, combined with the experience of an insider who knows how to get things done”, Rachael Myers, Ex Dir of WA Low Income Housing Alliance; “She has the people’s knowledge of City Hall”, UFCW Local 21; “With Lisa Herbold, you have a voice at City Hall!”; all so true, and fabulous

    ~

thank you to all the candidates for your informative mailers; this constituent appreciates all your hard work in this crazy campaign of 9 people who want to serve as our representative on City Council

Mailers I’ve received in the last week:

1 each from Roderick, Bradburd, Burgess, Robles, Gonzales, Braddock.

    3 from Lisa Herbold.

    Zero from anyone else.

It may just be that I live in Arbor Heights, and a great many entities haven’t figured out that we are actually within the City limits, despite splitting a zip code with Burien.

As far as mailers providing “informative”, “true, and fabulous” content, I have to wonder what you’ve been smoking, Diane? How can you possibly believe that any of your own quotes from mailers are anything but superficial advertising? Is that jibberish what you consider substantial? I could glean more content from the front of a cereal box.

You’ve also suggested that if voters want to gain substantive information about a candidate that they have one of two choices: attend a face-to-face forum…or GLOSSY MAILERS!!! I hate to break it to you, but I’ve heard of this thingy called the internet. Better yet, there’s this awesome resource called the West Seattle Blog, which, IMO, has provided the very best coverage of all in regard to this race. Sometimes you have to read more than what is contained in a few bubble quotes, but you’d be surprised what you learn!

Last, but not least – if you actually believe that an objection to junk mail is “spreading hate” you seriously need to get a grip.

thanks for more details anonyme; based on that information, I would say Lisa Herbold has been THE most inclusive candidate, by making sure all of her mailers reached your neighborhood that you describe as “great many entities haven’t figured out that we are actually within the City limits”; clearly Lisa does know you are part of Seattle, and made a point of spending the money to reach you with all of her mailers; Lisa should get kudos for that; doesn’t it make you wonder why the other D-1 candidates did not reach your neighborhood with their mailers? I am now even more impressed with Lisa Herbold for her knowledge of who is within D-1 and including all in her mailers
