KeithMemberAma Ama, Shadowlands and Blue Willow have been up and running for a while now… anyone have recent experiences to share from any of those spots, or some of the other newer places in WS?
Still haven’t tried Shadowlands but I’m a fan of Ama Ama, especially for their amazing happy hour deals. Blue Willow always seems to be busy but I’ve never stopped in to check it out.
I did finally try a slice of shoofly pie the other day. Wasn’t all that impressed, but I’m going to give Shoofly another shot via their coconut cream.

addParticipantBlue Willow’s Luncheonette is a great place for lunch – always fresh & delicious choices and a casual, friendly environment!

BonnieParticipantI feel like an idiot. I cannot think of where Blue Willow is.

WSBKeymasterPart of its space is the ex-Backstage Thrift on Oregon just west of California — couple doors down from Craze Clothing, directly across from the north side of WaMu’s main Junction location.

shihtzuParticipantI wasn’t too impressed with Shadowland, although I must say their burger was fantastic.
We went on a weekend night, looking for a somewhat swanky, adult night out. We got a plain old bar (with decent food) with a BLARING football game on TV.
Probably won’t go back there.
I really hate oysters, but do want to try Ama Ama. Shoofly pie was good, but …eh…it’s pie.

AimParticipantI reviewed Ama Ama on my blog not too long ago. Not a professional restaurant review, but I’ve gotten a lot of good feedback on it nonetheless. Click my name to get to my blog, and then on the far left, under most popular, click on the review link.

CroweMemberOut of the places mentioned I’ve only been to one.
I am a pie lover. And Shoofly rocks. All butter crust, flaky, the inside is just as good as the outside, Chicken pot pie for dinner, and cherry pie for dessert. Yum. If you need a good recipe for a broken heart, this is it. Comfort food at it’s best.
Am-ama sounds like a place to check out for sure.
I’ve heard all good so far.

JimmyGMemberI was disappointed by Shoofly, I tried the strawberry-rhubarb and it was way too dry for my liking. The 3 friends that also tried it were underwhelmed.
As for Ama Ama, I’m having a hard time reconciling an oyster bar place that’s not on the water. One of these days I’ll give in and try it.

AnonymousInactiveWe just went out for an early dinner to Mission and we love that place. The food is awesome and the people that work there are extremely friendly.

beachdrivegirlParticipantLa Rustica has my vote hands down! Although it can be a bit crowded at times and it is not the most intimate restaurant I have never been disappointed with any item ordered and everyone there always seems so friendly!

villagegreenMemberAnother bump for Ama Ama. Have been to their happy hour several times and was very happy with the food and the rock bottom prices. Had dinner once and was also impressed. Very good and the portions were fairly large for the price. Definitely worth giving it a try if you haven’t. And don’t worry, if you’re not an oyster fan they actually play somewhat of a minor role on the menu (plenty of other fish to choose from).
Would still like to try Shadowland. Walked in once on a weekend and the wait was too long so we left. Did have a drink there once, though. Seems hard to reconcile the steep food prices with the overall ‘bar’ feel. Definitely fails at creating the tapas restaurant feel I was hoping for. Almost like they just replicated the feel of Talarico’s or Mission, but with much higher prices.

LAintheJunctionParticipantI’m going to have to try Ama Ama for happy hour. Similar to villagegreen’s comment about Shadowland, we were unpleasantly surprised at Ama Ama by the expensive prices for dinner, given the “bar and lounge” feel of the restaurant. We were already committed by that point though, since we ordered drinks from the bar so we stayed for dinner. Oysters, a shared salad, two entrees, and drinks for two people came to $120, including tax and a 20% tip. That’s our eating out budget for the month, so we won’t be going back there anytime soon, unless they have REAL rock bottom prices for happy hour.

flowerpetalMemberI was disappointed with Shoofly Pie but will give it another try. Any restaurant can have a bad day. I certainly have had a few in my own kitchen. I had a slice of pie with a crust so tuff that I needed a fork and knife. When I attempted af firts to break the crust with the side of my fork the plate almost did a flip! Not at all what crust should be like
But the whole concept of a pie place is great and just needs some tweaking. If I were the proprieters I would consider a few small side salads or a soup of the day to accompany the savory pies.
Ama Ama = Yummy Yummy And someone is going to have say some nice things about Shadowland before I go there. I keep waiting..

beachdrivegirlParticipantAma Ama–I loved! I tried Shadowland twice (once on opening night and then one other time.) I am not sold on it yet the service always seems a bit slow and their menu a bit odd….

JenVMemberI will say nice things about Shadowland! Katie, Jay, Jill, Whitney- the service is fantastic! The mac and cheese is transcendant! the lighting makes everyone look nice!

charlabobParticipantBeato — we’ve been there three times in the past year (including New Years’ Eve) and we love it. Loved it when it was Ovio — still do. Good and interesting food, in small enough portions that you can try several. And the wine flights are fun — guess I like variety:

squareeyesParticipantI’ve had two different soups at Shadowlands – celery root and butternut squash. Both were excellent. My friend tried the roasted olives. As much as I love olives I can’t just sit there and eat them like fries so that was a miss for me. Most of the menu items sound delicious but price is an issue. I believe they’ve got some happy hour selections 4-6pm but I haven’t been there in time to sample. I wish they’d come down a dollar or two on their wine by the glass. I must say that Ama Ama has them well beat on the price of a glass of wine.
March 11, 2008 at 4:36 pm #617034
squareeyesParticipantSpeaking of a glass of wine, I paid $12 for a glass of wine at Jak’s a couple of weeks ago. It was a wonderful experience but still – $12? I made that glass last a loonnnggg time. A gentleman bought me a second glass. I love sitting at the bar and striking up conversations with strangers. Thank you!

kathyhParticipantWe’ve tried Shadowlands a few times and its growing on us. It didn’t grab us initially because of the big-screen TVs and dark atmosphere, but as handy as it is for we, we’ve gone back and like it better each time. The mac and cheese IS pretty amazing and their fries with fried greens in ’em are great (and I don’t even like green beans…) Wine is expensive there, but good…
March 12, 2008 at 1:29 am #617036
addParticipantAgreed that $12 for a glass of wine is a lot, unless it’s a really special wine! I didn’t like that at Shadowlands there really weren’t too many (somewhat affordable) wine by the glass choices. One other thing, if it’s gonna be expensive, make it a generous pour!!! Maybe it’s changed, we went on their first weekend and haven’t had the chance to go back. (And since I was there with my husband, not a lot of luck in getting a “gentleman/stranger” to buy me another glass of that pricey wine!) :)

biankatParticipantLove the ‘small bites’ menu at Shadowland. We’ve been several times and are sure to get the hummus at each outing. It’s SOOO good. Mac & Cheese is amazing, Wagyu burger is decadent, Roasted Olives were delish (but definitely for olive lovers). Not too impressed by the salad. Staff are very friendly and personable.
Ama Ama does have a nicely priced happy hour. Unfortunately we missed it and ate anyway. I’m not a seafood eater at all, so I took advantage of all the non-fishy items. I really enjoyed the Mushroom Mac & Cheese sans oysters. I found it very mushroomy…which is right up my alley. I also had the sliders, but found the meat a bit tough and fatty at the same time. The brioche buns were fantastic though. They, like the delicious chocolate cake, come from Bakery Nouveau. My husband had a scallops dish and oyster dish. Wasn’t thrilled by either. On the plus side the bar is very cool and modern.
I’ve not had the opportunity to try Blue Willow, but peeked at the menu a while back and was intrigued.

WSMomParticipantI just love Blue Willow. I had her tomato bisque soup and chopped salad on Friday. The soup was simply delicious. Such good wholesome food! She uses high quality healthy ingrediants to make really wonderful dishes. I especially find her soups amazing.

SueParticipantWe went to Shadowland for the first time last week. The food was okay, but I thought it was really too pricey for what it was and the atmosphere. We chose a booth in the back (since I hate high bar chairs), and it was an all wooden booth, no padding – not too comfortable for a while. And a large table was back there with a lot of people making TONS of noise. My husband ordered the half chicken for $18, I think it was. It came on such a tremendously huge plate that it really emphasized how small a meal it was. That’s the smallest “half chicken” I’ve ever seen. Came with greens and polenta (admittedly the best polenta I’ve tasted, and before that I would’ve said I hated polenta, because I usually do). I ordered the cassie (mac & cheese) and the scallops. I’d definitely eat the cassie again – really good, and I loved the breaded crust on top like my mom used to do. The scallops – 2 of them for $11 – WAY pricey. They were good, but not “to die for” good for that price. I wouldn’t order it again. I saw the burger go by me, and at that price for burger/fries ($12), I’d be willing to try it. We don’t drink, so I can’t comment on their wines. I won’t rule out Shadowlands, but it won’t be a regular stop for us.

livingonthebeachMemberI was very impressed with Ama Ama. Our first experience there was good food and moderate service. We casually mentioned something when we made our next reservations and Rob (manager) came to our table and personally apologized and offered a very nice gesture. We have been back several times and love the menu and our server Jo. PS…I don’t like oysters either, but their menu has some fun stuff.
