Living.in.the.Wild.WestParticipantSo not only do we have a HUGE shortage of police for a city this size, but the ones we do have don’t want to do their jobs. An officer was sitting at the Din Armeni boat ramp this morning and when I asked him to clear the illegally parked vehicles, he stated that they let people park there out of boating season, and that he wasn’t parking enforcement anyway. Only when I wrote down the vehicle number he was in did he approach the vehicles. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t it their job to protect AND serve? And wasn’t there an incident the other day at the boat ramp? Perhaps if it were patrolled regularly, that incident could have been avoided.

NorthbyNorthWestParticipantInteresting, so you feel like you are this officer’s boss and can give them orders?

JanSParticipantdid you say please? I find that a bit arrogant, just walking up to a police officer who may have been taking a break (they do get some), and just telling him what to do. I believe that’s not in my scope of practice.

2 Much WhineParticipantFor every person that writes to complain that the police didn’t give someone a parking ticket for being in the wrong spot or bust an off-leash dog walker, there is another that will post saying they shouldn’t be wasting their time busting people for trivial things like parking or bus lane violators and they are just trying to fill the city coffers. They can’t win no matter what they do. Oh, and by the way, PEOPLE SHOOT GUNS AT THEM
and spit on them. Glad I’m not a cop.March 30, 2016 at 4:31 pm #838861
Living.in.the.Wild.WestParticipant@NorthbyNorthWest: No, I do not feel as though I am his boss. I do however feel that SPD officers should be approachable, and that citizens should be able to report crimes to them. I’m pretty sure that’s their job. And @JanS, if he was on a break he did not inform me of that, and if he had, I would have been fine with that, as they absolutely deserve breaks. And I didn’t just walk up and say “Go bust those people over there right now!” I simply said “There are a couple cars parked over there that shouldn’t be” to which he responded with “we let it slide if its not boating season” and “I’m not parking enforcement”. Not very professional in my opinion, and there is no parking in that area whether or not it is boating season.

Jd seattleParticipantIf SPD doesn’t have enough officers why would you want them running around and spending time issuing parking tickets? That’s why Seattle has a separate entity just for that. Call parking enforcement if it’s a parking issue.

anonymeParticipantI recently called the number for SPD parking enforcement, and was told by the officer who eventually answered the phone that there “is no parking enforcement”. She said that regular officers would respond as time allowed (= never). The situation I was calling to report involved a vehicle that appeared to have been stolen and dumped, blocking a lane of traffic. But no one was interested.
A car rancher in the neighborhood has junk vehicles that have been on the street for years now. I gave up reporting them after three reports to SPD in one year failed to get a single response – not even a tag/notice, much less a tow. I think it’s pretty obvious that both traffic and parking enforcement have become obsolete, at least in this neck of the woods.

giglsmithParticipantI have had issues over the years with parking like RV campers living on the street and have never had an issue with the city removing them.
There is an ordinance and there is parking enforcement. It may take a day or two for them to respond but you fill out the online form and then they will come ticket the car or offending vehicle.
I have found if you post a time stamped picture it helps for the parking officers to enforce the law.
I think most of you on these forums just like to complain but if go here and fill out the form you will get an office coming to enforce the ordinance, but you have to realize you are the not the only person submitting and the response might take a day or two.http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/parking/parking72hour.htm
