West Seattle garage sale was a pretty great idea. I’m looking forward to next years. Some folks on my block had some free stuff to give away: a toilet and the remains of what may have been a motorcycle. So they put a free sign on it and put it on the curb. Oh, actually they dragged the crap to the end of the block and put it on the curb in front of someone else’s house. The garage sale was Saturday, now its Monday, the crap is still there. If anyone wants it its on the corner of Charlestown & 41st Ave SW.

Sounds like the beginning of a public art installation to me — if I had a car today, I’d be all over it. The b (and, perhaps, my neighbors) will be very happy that I don’t have a car.

B5, I don’t think it’s appropriate for you to be publicly posting other people’s addresses with a complaint about something they’ve allegedly done – if you have a problem with it, you should be dealing with them personally or notifying appropriate authorities.

Charla, please don’t tell me you’re one of those people who thinks planting flowers in a toilet in your front yard, is art. I’ll have to re-evaluate my whole opinion of you:-)

Noooooo–we’re talking metal sculpture, modern, unrecognizable. When I get done with things, they never look like what they ever were. I’m actually psyched about parts of something that might have once been a motorcycle.

Although I do have a modest collection of tasteful pink flamingos, judiciously scattered about the yard.

Pink flamingos are required lawn ornaments, aren’t they? You get a pass for those! And I am greatly relieved about the other. I think I might have a garage waiting for you to peruse. Don’t tell the GF.

charlabob – you might appreciate my friend’s work – he is an artist in Kentucky but lived in Seattle for many years and he mostly does metal “assemblages” from found/scoured objects .. check it out! http://www.devlingallery.com

I agree with Sue and am deleting the specific address. The corner seems plenty specific and if the OP knows whose it is, reporting it to the authorities would seem appropriate. (Now that WSCGSD is over, one of the many housekeeping/site-improvement tasks we are working on is a concise direct link to posting rules for comments and forum, so look for that soon.) — TR

Tuesday evening update: The motorbike frame/wheel is gone, but the terlet is still available.

If I still lived on that block that crap would have gone to the dump on Sunday morning, a well spent 15.00

Kudos (NOT) to those people that have been looking out their living room window at this junk for 4 days now for pitching in to keep the neighborhood clean.

First, rather than gripe about it, if you know who put the garbage there in the first place, call the police and they will site the people responsible and make them clean it up. Our neighborhood association does this on a regular basis and it is very effective. Much more effective than just complaining about it and doing nothing.

Second, “hillbilly??” Are you kidding me with that stuff?? Hillbilly??? If there is going to be a set of rules and regulations, I would hope that the offensive use of derogatory social terms be banned and those users accounts be deleted. Proud hillbilly here from the Norther Appalachian Mountain regions of Ohio and West Virginia. If we call ourselves hillbillies that’s one thing… if you use it as a broad, sweeping derogatory term, that’s another.

Stop your whining and get out and do something in your neighborhood to clean it up and stop being so rude an offensive in your language toward a social grouping of people.

There, if anyone wants to complain about me being offensive by saying the original post and title is offensive, go right ahead. I’m sick of this kind of stuff happening on this blog and nothing being done about it. That type of hate language is inappropriate and unacceptable.

Shibaguyz, I appreciate the information about this term – while it’s not one that I use personally, I did not realize the offensiveness of it to a group of people. So thank you for the education on that. (And yes, I’m being sincere.)

One thing I’d suggest that if something is offensive to you (or anyone else here) on the forum, please don’t hesitate to email TR about it – she has been very responsive to me when I’ve emailed her about things, and always looks into my concerns. Then she’ll reply with either the reasoning for why it’s okay by her, or will take action on it (like when I said that I didn’t think it was appropriate that the address of these people shouldn’t be posted). I know that they are sensitive to prejudicial insults on here, but they admittedly don’t police the forum the way they do the blog so don’t always see everything.

If there are occasions where our rules have been broken on the forum and the posts are still up, I would appreciate someone calling it to our attention. As I’ve said before, the volume currently means this has to be somewhat self-policing. And the rules here are a little looser than in the regular comments on the news portion of this site. Our major red flags are traits with which people are born: race, gender, size, sexual orientation among them. That said, I’m currently not banning hillbilly. I will research further (AP style is one of my major defaults and I’m looking for my most recent copy; also have checked on whether it’s banned at major publications such as NY Times) as time allows but that’s the current ruling. — TR

In my experience, a non-race, gender, size, sexual orientation, or location synonym for this kind of person would be “trash.” Or “trashy folks.” This does not necessarily refer to what’s lying around their property.

Ah, but then you get into “White Trash” and it devolves from there. :-) I actually started to rant about this headline when I first saw it. (I spent a couple of years teaching English and Math to Hill Williams at Berea College in Kentucky and I’m fiercely loyal to the Appalachian region.) I’m really looking forward to seeing what TR uncovers.

You know what, that reminds me of something.

When we first moved here in October, we drove past a little yard (more like a fenced side of a small hill), that had little goats there. I remember seeing people there, petting them.

Where is that? Was I hallucinating?

    NR –

Maybe I’m in a particularly odd mood, but your post strikes me as so FUNNY, it has me laughing. It is possible you were hallucinating, I suppose, but it seems likely you saw the traveling ruminants folks hire to clear brush – not so much a petting zoo.

I haven’t figured out how to do the link to the stories, so just search “goats” from the homepage. Lots of posts on the WSB about them.

    Funny :).

There are a couple goats that live at a house on Alki near the water taxi, but I don’t think you can pet them.

I think there is something funny about “goats”.

I received an email from someone regarding my request and the email was titled “goats” and that was absolutely hilarious to me also!

I realize things are done differently here, but for us Phoenicians, petting goats can be an exciting thing! Lol.

    Goat Joke, enjoy

Two men were walking through the woods and came upon a big, black, deep hole. One man picked up a rock and tossed it into the hole and stood listening for the rock to hit bottom. Nothing.

He turned to the other guy and said “that must be a deep hole…let’s throw a bigger rock in there and listen for it to hit bottom.”

The men found a bigger rock and both picked it up and lugged it to the hole and dropped it in. They listened for some time and….nothing.

Again, they agreed that this must be one deep hole and maybe they should throw something even bigger into it.

One man spotted a big log nearby. They picked it up, grunting and groaning, and threw it to the hole, listening intently……nothing.

All of a sudden, a goat came flying out of the woods, running like the wind, and flew past the men and jumped straight into the hole. The men were astounded.

They walked on through the woods, and a little later met an old farmer who asked the men if they had seen a goat. One man told the farmer of the incredible incident they had just witnessed…they had just seen this goat fly out of the woods, and run and leap into the big hole. He asked the farmer if this could have been his goat.

The old farmer said “Naw, that can’t be my goat…he was chained to a big log.”

    Hillbilly is “hate language”?

    Puh-leeeze.

It may offend you, but it’s not “hate language”.
