Sat 3am – fireworks woke up the neighborhood in vicinity of 56th by Alki. Same person was still letting fireworks off 3am this morning. I am not against fireworks, but I think 3am is ridiculous, especially when everyone else has stopped and gone to bed. It is illegal and extremely inconsiderate to your neighbors with pets and/or kids and those who have to get up and go to work. If I sound cranky, you should also know that this person also lets off fireworks year-round so our patience is gone for this person’s behavior. Next time it happens we will not be nice neighbors anymore and police will be called.

should have called police a long time ago. I heard some loud booms about 2:30am, too…I’m in Admiral near Safeway…

Last night fireworks in this area were a loud disturbance until 2:00 a.m. We were surprised that it continued as long as it did. Extremely inconsiderate and obnoxious. We assumed that the police had long since been called or we’d have phoned them. Now I wish that we had.

I’m amazed thinking about how much money was burning up all day and night long. Those mortars are not cheap! People were launching them even in the middle of the day which defeats the purpose a bit I think

I enjoy a good fireworks celebration when the time is right, but I also agree that what goes on around here every 4th is way too much. Our poor dog has been hiding under the porch for a week and spent all day and night yesterday in the bathroom. I’ll do my part to not be a loud jerk at 3am, and I wish more people would do the same.

It won’t help to call the police. I tried. 911 blew me off. They said unless someone was injured or something caught on fire, they had no interest. Transferred me to non-emergency line. Rang for 45 minutes then I hung up. Arbor heights was like WW three. Could not enjoy watching TV as the bombs kept going off. four hours not stop. This is just crazy! It is illegal but the police don’t seem to care. What is the point of the law if the police can’t be bothered to enforce it. Or can’t be bothered to answer the phone when a tax paying citizen calls.

Agree with you, Michael. I’m also in Arbor Heights. The one time I did see a cop car out here, it carefully maneuvered around a huge rocket-launching setup that was blocking half the street, and went on it’s way. It’s an oft-repeated myth that the problem is lack of police. SPD policy (as loudly proclaimed in the media year after year) is to NOT enforce the law – which merely encourages this rampant lawlessness year after year. Seattle has created an environment of extreme hostility toward law abiding taxpayers.

Last night I was woken up by more big booms a bit after 3am. I’m in AH and they sounded distant. So, I’m guessing some neighborhood north of here got a very rude awakening. I wish these inconsiderate people would knock it off! I couldn’t get back to sleep for hours and now I’m running on barely enough sleep for the day.

Had firecrackers and the occasional boom going on throughout the day yesterday. Firecrackers increased a bit into the evening.

Put ear plugs in again at bedtime, but kept the bedroom windows slightly open as usual, instead of closed like the night before.

Someone was continuing their fireworks display with huge rocket booms near Solstice Park last night. 10:30pm, 11:30pm and at least 12:30. I hate it and the least these jerk wads could do is get it all over with at once!

Anonyme and others in Arbor Heights, now that the dust has settled, what do you think about calling or emailing your local precinct and Chief O’Toole about your concerns? True, you might just get the usual spin, but at least your very reasonable concerns will be noted. Here’s the link to the Southwest Precinct:

Jeannie, I’m hoping to do more than that. Had a plan prior to the 4th, but just didn’t have time to implement in time. I want to write letters to all the powers that be, both local and state, and possibly start a petition as well. I’m hearing more reports that mirror my own experience of witnessing police carefully maneuver around large illegal fireworks setups in the street, without saying boo. This clearly negates the excuse of “not enough police”. They are deliberately ignoring the issue. This can’t go on. If anyone would like to meet/assist in this enterprise, perhaps we can make a change for next year.

I have a few thoughts on this. A petition to have the police enforce the law. Or Change the law and allow fireworks on the 4th until Midnight and fine people after that time. Or just completely legalize it. The latter I don’t want. There is an online site called Care2 Petitions or thepetitionsite.com
Although I don’t sign many of them, there are some that I do sign. I wonder what would happen if next year Some citizens went to the neighborhood of the Chief of Police, the Mayor, and City Council members and starting lighting Fireworks especially after midnight. I prefer the petition approach. It was amazing from where I was on the night of the 4th. I could see SODO to Seatac. The amount of fireworks lit was incredible.

i wish i thought letters would work. I will be doing my own version of letters distributed in my neighborhood just as soon as i can find a less hostile tone with which to write them…

but.. i don’t believe they will work because i believe that people who care about the well being of those around them already have ample information on which to base their choices.. and they have chosen to ignore the fact that their behavior impacts other people negatively.

i don’t know how you legislate that… their behavior is already illegal.. it is already injurious to their neighbor’s health.. it is risky behavior that is as likely to burn someone else’s home down as their own.. and yet they somehow think they have a right to their bit of “fun”.

What can you do with that?
